REASON FOR THIS EMISSION RECALL
In all of the affected vehicles, the onboard diagnostic (OBD) system contains a software error that prevents illumination of the malfunction indicator light (MIL) if a fault is present in the front or rear nitrogen oxide (NOx) sensor or in the catalytic converter portion of the selective catalyst reduction (SRC) system. If there is a fault in the NOx sensor or the SCR, exhaust emissions may be elevated, and the MIL does not illuminate. After the powertrain control module (PCM) is reprogramed with the updated calibration plus several customer drive cycles, the OBD system will be able to begin to detect these NOx sensor and SCR faults previously masked by the software error and will light the MIL if faults are found to be present.
SERVICE ACTION
Before delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to reprogram the PCM to latest calibration level using Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) release 120.07 or higher. This service must be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.
NOTE: 21E01 must be completed by December 31, 2023 and its claim submitted before the three referenced customer satisfaction programs (21N02, 21N05, and 21N06) will be activated.
NOTE: The State of California and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts require the completion of emission recall repairs prior to vehicle registration renewal. For vehicles registered in these states, please provide the owner with a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction certificate after the repair has been performed. These certificates may be obtained by contacting your regional office.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE
Owner Letters are expected to be mailed the week of August 2, 2021. Dealers should repair any
affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.
NOTE: Owners are being notified of Emission Recall 21E01 and of a potential eligibility of three
related Customer Satisfaction programs (21N02, 21N05, and 21N06) with one combined owner
notification letter.
PLEASE NOTE:
The sale of uncorrected new vehicles to customers could lead to penalties under applicable
state and Federal regulations. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to
delivery.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Module Reprogramming
NOTE: Reprogram appropriate vehicle modules before performing diagnostics and clear all DTC’s after programming. For DTC’s generated after reprogramming, follow normal diagnostic service procedures.
1. Connect a battery charger to the 12V battery.
NOTE: Verify that the negative cable of the charger is installed on a chassis or engine ground, and not the 12 volt battery negative terminal to prevent the battery saver mode from activating on the vehicle.
NOTE: Make sure the IDS computer does not enter sleep mode during programming.
2. Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) using Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) release 120.07 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the Internet prior to reprogramming.
NOTE: Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.
NOTE: Follow the IDS on-screen instructions to complete the reprogramming procedure.
3. Disconnect the battery charger from the 12V battery once the reprogramming has completed.
NOTE: Advise the customer that this vehicle is equipped with an adaptive transmission shift strategy which allows the vehicle’s computer to learn the transmission’s unique parameters and improve shift quality. When the adaptive strategy is reset, the computer will begin a re-learning process.
This re-learning process may result in firmer than normal upshifts and downshifts for several days.

Important Information for Module Programming
NOTE: When programming or reprogramming a module, use the following basic checks to ensure programming completes without errors.
โข Make sure the 12V battery is fully charged before carrying out the programming steps and connect IDS/scan tool to a power source.
โข Inspect Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) and cables for any damage. Make sure scan tool connections are not interrupted during programming.
โข A hardwired connection is strongly recommended.
โข Turn off all unnecessary accessories (radio, heated/cooled seats, headlamps, interior lamps, HVAC system, etc.) and close doors.
โข Disconnect/depower any aftermarket accessories (remote start, alarm, power inverter, CB radio, etc.).
โข Follow all scan tool on-screen instructions carefully.
โข Disable IDS/scan tool sleep mode, screensaver, hibernation modes.
โข Create all sessions Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO). Starting the vehicle before creating a session will cause errors within the programming inhale process.
Recovering a module when programming has resulted in a blank module:
NEVER DELETE THE ORIGINAL SESSION!
a. Obtain the original IDS that was used when the programming error occurred during Module Reprogramming (MR) or Programmable Module Installation (PMI).
b. Disconnect the VCM from the Data Link Connector (DLC) and the IDS.
c. Reconnect the VCM to IDS and then connect to the DLC. Once reconnected, the VCM icon should appear in the corner of the IDS screen. If it does not, troubleshoot the IDS to VCM connection.
d. Locate the original vehicle session when programming failed. This should be the last session used in most cases. If not, use the session created on the date that the programming failed.
NOTE: If the original session is not listed in the previous session list, click the Recycle Bin icon at the lower right of the previous session screen. This loads any deleted sessions and allows you to look through them. Double-click the session to restore it.
e. Once the session is loaded, the failed process should resume automatically.
f. If programming does not resume automatically, proceed to the Module Programming menu and select the previously attempted process, PMI or MR.
g. Follow all on-screen prompts/instructions.
h. The last screen on the IDS may list additional steps required to complete the programming process.

Your vehicleโs on-board diagnostic system may not illuminate the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on your dashboard to alert you when certain faults are present in your vehicleโs emissions control system. What is the effect? If your vehicleโs emissions control system is not functioning properly, exhaust emissions may be elevated while you drive, and your vehicleโs diagnostics system might not be able to alert you of the faults. Under Emissions Recall 21E01, Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to reprogram the PCM free of charge (parts and labor). You are eligible for this free service even if you previously used non-Ford parts to service your vehicle or had your vehicle serviced at a non-Ford dealer. If you do not have this service performed: โข Your vehicle may not pass emission or smog tests, which may be required in your area. โข Your State Department of Motor Vehicles may not renew your vehicle registration. โข Your emissions warranty may be reduced. ยฉ Copyright 2021 Ford Motor Company What will Ford and your dealer do? (continued) After your vehicleโs PCM has been reprogrammed under Emissions Recall 21E01, it may take several driving trips before the diagnostic system will alert you if there is a fault in the NOx sensors or SCR. Please see the โReadiness for Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Testingโ section in your Owner Manual for details on the required driving cycles for the diagnostic system to complete its checks. If your vehicle later displays a MIL in the dashboard panel, and your dealer determines that there is a fault in the NOx sensors or SCR that sets a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC), Ford Motor Company is extending the warranty coverage of the following parts for twelve months of service, beginning on the date the PCM is reprogrammed under Emissions Recall 21E01: โข The front NOx Sensor under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N02. โข The rear NOx Sensor under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N05. โข The SCR (converter) under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N06. Vehicles will no longer be eligible for free service under Programs 21N02, 21N05, or 21N06 after December 31, 2024 with or without Emissions Recall 21E01 performed. After Programs 21N02, 21N05, and 21N06 expire, the NOx Sensors and SCR (converter) remain covered under your original warranty terms and conditions.
