Key Code Lookup
This product will allow registered automotive security professionals to request the Key Code for the mechanical cut on a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle built in the United States for model years 1997-present based up Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Please note that there is no electronic PIN code required to reprogram Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) keys for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles built in North America up through Model Year 2013. These North American Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles have PATS/ Immobilizer systems that are built with a time delay feature.
- The following steps are necessary to reprogram keys after all have been lost:
- Have 2 keys available for programming.
- A Ford diagnostic tool (described under Tools & Equipment on Non-Subscription Resources menu) OR Ford Module Programming software (available by subscription under Reprogramming & Intialization on Subscription Products menu)

Software
Ford diagnostic software must be downloaded and installed on a PC meeting the minimum specifications posted here. The software may be downloaded for free, however requires the purchase of a software license or “activation key” that is entered into the software to allow use of the software. Ford diagnostic software consists of three different products which are detailed below.
Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) – Provides complete dealership level vehicle diagnostic coverage for all 1996 to select 2018 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. IDS requires the use of Ford diagnostic hardware including VCM, VCM II, and VCMM devices. The IDS software license includes time based access to the IDS software, software updates and calibration files.
Ford J2534 Diagnostic Software (FJDS) – Provides module reprogramming software that covers 1996 to select 2018 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury module reprogramming functions, plus complete dealership level diagnostic software for all 2018 to present Ford and Lincoln vehicles. FJDS is designed for use with J2534 compatible Vehicle Communications Interfaces (VCI) including Ford diagnostic hardware (VCM II, or VCMM). The FJDS software license includes time based access to the FJDS software, software updates and calibration files.
Ford Diagnostic & Repair System (FDRS) – The next generation factory Ford Motor Company vehicle diagnostic Software designed for use with VCM II, VCMM and J2534 compatible Vehicle Communications Interfaces (VCI). FDRS provides complete dealership level vehicle diagnostic coverage for some 2018 and forward vehicles. FDRS provides superior capabilities, is more user-friendly and provides more diagnostic tools than IDS. The cloud-based system ensures the technician is provided the latest software every time FDRS logs into the Ford network. The FDRS software license is shared with IDS or FJDS. Access to FDRS is included with the purchase of either IDS or FJDS software license.
VCM II – The VCM II is Ford’s diagnostic hardware Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) device. The VCM II is required for use of IDS, and is the recommended VCI for use with both FDRS and FJDS. For more information or if you would like to purchase a VCM II please click here.

Ford DiagNow
Your affordable mobile diagnostic tool!
To use the Ford DiagNow mobile application, users must:
- a) Dealership employees will login to Ford DiagNow app using their existing dealership credentials. This is the same username and password used on FMC Dealer or PTS.

VCM3 – The VCM3 is Ford’s new Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) and is required for use of IDS, and is the recommended VCI for use with both FDRS and FJDS. Unlike the VCMII and VCMM, the VCM3 is capable of communicating on both the J1708 and J1939 networks. This allows for a higher level of diagnostics on Medium Duty Trucks when paired with the Rotunda Medium Duty Truck DLC adapter and manufacturer specific software. We trust this upgrade will help you service the needs of your customers. It’s also capable of performing module reprogramming at increased speeds on vehicles that are soon to be released and are equipped with the new CAN-FD network. VCM II – The discontinued VCM II is a diagnostic hardware Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) device. The VCM II is still capable of performing full dealership level diagnostics on 1996 to present Ford and Lincoln vehicles when used with Ford Diagnostic Software including IDS and FDRS. The VCMII was discontinued due to aging hardware components and has been replaced by the VCM3.

Customer Flight Recorder (CFR)– The CFR pendant is required to enable the CFR functionality of the VCM II and VCMM. The CFR pendant is accessory that allows technicians to capture and record specific vehicle data without requiring the presence of a laptop computer in the vehicle. The CFR pendant can be used for long test drives for hard-to-diagnose concerns, running on vehicle power there are no batteries to charge! DS Cleanup Utility For Windows XP, Windows 7 32-Bit and Windows 7 64-Bit PCs:
The IDS Cleanup Utility removes prior IDS software files that may prevent the installation of a new IDS software version. When an IDS software installation error occurs, do the following steps:
- Uninstall IDS using Start > All Programs > Ford Motor Company > Uninstall IDS
- Reboot PC
- Run the IDS CleanUp Utility
- Reboot PC
- Re-install IDS
- Reboot PC

IDS Software Licensing Help
A new IDS Software Licensing subscription process, released in 2011, replaces the current VCM/IDS subscription process. This site includes a number of help documents related to this new process. The first document provides facts that introduce the concepts associated with IDS Software Licensing. The second document includes step-by-step instructions for getting started with IDS Software Licensing. The remaining documents provide detailed instructions on functions that can be performed on a license.
Facts About IDS Software Licensing
General Information
- A unique license is required for each computer.
- The license is assigned to the computer it is activated on.
- A license can only be used on one computer at a time.
- Vehicle Communication through the VCM is disabled without an active license.
- A license can be transferred to a different PC.
- Licenses are active for a fixed period of time and expire on the expiration date.
- A license can be renewed, returned and transferred to a different PC.
- A license can be renewed within 30 days of expiration.
- Uninstalling IDS does not uninstall the license.
Types of Licenses
Production License
- Can be installed many times on the computer it is assigned to.
- An Activation Code is required to activate the license.
- Activation does require communication with the License Server.
- Activation can be done using either an online or offline process.
- Is a renewable license.
- Can only be renewed online.
- The renewal process does not require manual entry of an Activation Code.
Production License Status
- Active – An active and valid license with Vehicle Communications enabled.
- Inactive – An inoperable license resulting from computer clock rollback or computer hardware changes with Vehicle Communications disabled.
- Invalid – A license past its validation deadline with Vehicle Communications disabled.
- Expired – A license past its expiration date with Vehicle Communications disabled.
IDS Software License Functions
License Validation
- An activated Production License requires regular Validation to remain active.
- When internet connected, Validation is automatically done by IDS as a background task
- When not internet connected, IDS provides warnings as the Validation deadline approaches.
- Validation can be done either online or offline.
Returning a License/Transferring a License
- Any internet connected computer with a license can be used to Return or Transfer a license.
- A license can be transferred by activating a returned license on another computer.
- To Return a license online, select System Utilities\ License Management\Return License.
- To Return a license offline, select System Utilities\ License Management\Support Information.
Uninstalling IDS
- If IDS and the license are no longer needed, uninstall IDS and Return the license.
- If IDS is no longer needed, uninstall IDS and retain the license for future use.
Getting Started with IDS Software Licensing
Install IDS Software
Activate a Production License
- Follow the steps outlined on the IDS Software – Activate a License screen.
- Start with Step #1: Obtain an IDS Activation Code and follow the instructions on the screen for your market. In most cases a link will be provided that takes you to the Professional Technicians Society (PTS) website. Once there, select the Rotunda tab and the IDS Software Licensing selection from the dropdown list. An IDS Software Licenses screen will then display a list of Activation Codes within your dealership. Please consult your dealership management for policies governing distribution of these Activation Codes.
- Return to the IDS Software – Activate a License screen on IDS after obtaining an Activation Code.
- Complete Step #2: Enter the IDS Activation Code by selecting the Activate Production License button to start activation of the license.
- Enter the Activation Code when prompted on the IDS Software – Production License Activation screen. Note: if you viewed the IDS Software Licenses screen from the same computer you have IDS installed on, you can use Windows cut and paste to enter the Activation Code.
- Finish the activation by closing out the IDS Software – License Activation Success screen upon successful completion of your Production License activation. If an error occurred during the activation process, an IDS Software -License Activation Failure screen will be displayed with an error message to aid you in understanding what may have happened.
Access Your License Information in IDS
- You can view information about the license activated in IDS on your PC by selecting “Software License” from the IDS Information Menu.
IDS – Activating a License
IDS will work without a license, but Vehicle Communications will not. When There is No License
When you do not have a license IDS screen prompts will notify you that you do not have one and give you the option to get one by taking you to the following screen:
In Step 1, obtain an IDS Activation Code by following the instructions on the screen that are applicable to your market or proceed directly to Step 2 if you already have an Activation Code.
Return to the above screen to complete Step 2. Select the Activate Production License button and enter the Activation Code in the screen below.
IDS will communicate with the License Server if you are online to complete the activation process. Follow any instructions on IDS, if prompted to do so. Otherwise, you will see the following message that your license activated successfully.
If there was a problem, for example the wrong code was entered, you would see a message like the one below. This screen allows you to re-enter a different Activation Code and select the Retry button to try again.
Alternate System Utilities Method
The activation of a license can be done at any time by going to the System Utilities Page and selecting License Management and then Activate a License as shown below.
Offline Activation
When you are unable to work online you can use the offline option to activate a license. This process requires the manual transfer of files between IDS and the License Server via PTS.Begin the process by going to the IDS Software Activate a License screen using either of the two methods discussed above and enter your Activation Code, at which point you will receive the following screen:
Select the Off-line Activation button and read through the steps on the resulting screen shown below. Proceed to begin the steps by selecting the Continue button.
Select the Generate Off-line Request File button.
The next screen pop-up asks for the location on your PC where you want to save the Off-line Request File that you will generate in Step 1. You will need to take this file to a PC that has access to PTS, so a USB drive is preferred.
Follow the instructions provided in the screen below:
Select the Generate Offline Response File button from the IDS Software Licensing page as shown below.
Browse to the Offline Request File you saved on your USB drive and then save the Offline Response File you generate to your USB drive. Return to your computer and select the Next button.
Complete the offline activation by selecting the Import Offline Response File button from the screen below.
IDS – Validating a License
IDS must communicate with the License Server on a regular basis to validate the license. A validation automatically occurs at each start-up when IDS is connected to the internet. When IDS is not connected to the internet a validation cannot occur and warning messages will be displayed as the Validation deadline approaches as shown below.
Selecting the Validate button above will validate the license if IDS is connected to the internet at the time this validation is attempted. If IDS is not connected to the internet while attempting the validation, an offline validation process is available.
Failure to validate by the Validation deadline cause the license to become invalid, which disables Vehicle Communications as stated below.
Returning a License
IDS uses the term “return” to describe releasing the license from its tie to the PC on which it has been activated. When you activate a license it binds it to the PC. If a user wishes to transfer the license to another PC or if the PC goes through an Operating System upgrade or if you get a new PC, the license must be released from the PC prior to these changes. Users can release the license from a PC by using the “Return a License” feature within the IDS License Management menu. Once a license is returned/released from a PC it can be activated in IDS on another PC or the same PC using the “Activate a License” feature in IDS.
An IDS software license can be returned to the license server at anytime on an internet connected computer. To begin go to the System Utilities Page and select License Management.
Select Return a License from the dropdown menu.
A successful return of the license will display the following:
View the System Information Page prior to returning the license, which provides information about the license installed as shown in the example below.
View the System Information Page after returning the license, which should now indicate that no license is installed as shown in the example below.
If you are not connected to the internet, go to the System Utilities Page and select License Management and then Support Information from the dropdown list to obtain assistance with a return.
IDS -Transfer a License
An IDS software license must first be returned in order to transfer it to another computer. Once the license is returned to the License Server, activate the license on the computer you wish to transfer it to. If you are not internet connected, refer to the Returning a License online Help document for assistance with returning the license.
To begin, go to the System Utilities Page and select License Management.
Select Return a License from the dropdown menu.
Activate the license you just returned on the new computer that you want it transferred to, to continue the license transfer.
Follow the instructions available in the Activate a License online Help document.
IDS Software License Renewal Process
IDS Software Licenses must be renewed to continue using IDS beyond the expiration date. The license renewal process consists of two steps:
- In the IDS Software License Account* – Create a new 20-digit renewal activation code.
- In IDS – Activate the new 20-digit renewal activation code in IDS.
*IDS Software License Accounts accessed as follows: Ford Dealers and Ford Internal Users: PTS website, Ford Fleets: Fleet.ford.com → Maintenance → Technical Resource Center → PTS, Retail Customers: Motorcraftservice.com → IDS Software Licensing
Step 1 – Creating a New Renewal Activation Code in PTS
There are two ways to create a new renewal activation code as described below:
- Auto Renewal Process – (Available Only to Dealers and Ford Internal Users)
This process automatically creates a new renewal activation code thirty-four (34) days before the existing license expires. - Manual Renewal Process – (Available Only to Retail and Ford Fleet Accounts)
This process requires an action to select the Renew Button from the IDS Software Licensing Screen to create a new renewal activation code as shown below.
The above two processes create a new renewal activation code and assign it to the same Reference Number of the currently licensed activation code. Newly created renewal activation codes will be displayed and highlighted on the IDS Software Licensing Screen as shown below.
To view all the activation codes assigned to a given Reference Number, click on the Reference Number on the main IDS Software Licensing Screen.
The Reference Number details will then be displayed as shown below.
Step 2 – Activating a New Renewal Activation Code in IDS
There are two methods within IDS for activating a renewal activation code, both methods require an internet connection and are described below:
- Silent Activation Method
- This method automatically activates the renewal activation code in IDS.
- There is no screen displayed when the license is activated.
- User Initiated Method
- This method and allows the user to activate the renewal code at any time by selecting the System Utilities Page → License Management → Renew a License as shown below.

- A screen pop-up will display after completing the activation.
Once the renewal activation code is activated using one of the activation methods described above, the System Information Page in IDS will be updated with the new Activation Code (last 4) and the new expiration date as shown below. The IDS Software License Screen in the IDS Software License Account also updates the Status field to ‘In Use’.
IDS – Uninstalling IDS
The process of uninstalling IDS does not automatically remove the IDS software license. There is an option either to retain or to return the license to the License Server during the uninstall process as shown in the screen below. When making the decision to return the license or not, keep in mind that a license is not tied to a specific version of IDS software and is interchangeable with other versions. If you plan to reinstall IDS at some time in the future, you can retain the license on the computer until that time when you need it again. Otherwise, return the license to the License Server so it can be used on another computer.
