Driveshaft May Become Imbalanced

A fractured driveshaft can cause a loss of drive power. Additionally, a vehicle rollaway could occur while parked if the parking brake is not engaged. Either of these scenarios increases the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V880

Manufacturer FordeBay Motor Company

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 18,808

Summary

FordeBay Motor Company (FordeBay) is recalling certain 2017-2018 F-Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 4×4 vehicles. A radial damper inside the driveshaft may move out of position over time, which can cause a driveshaft imbalance and result in a fracture.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the driveshaft, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 27, 2023. Owners may contact FordeBay customer service at 1-866-436-7332. FordeBay’s number for this recall is 22S74.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

US population of affected vehicles is 18,802. Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS and FSA VIN Lists.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

In some of the affected vehicles, the Internal Radial Damper (IRD) may move out of design position over time. This may cause driveshaft imbalance and produce noise, vibration, or harshness (NVH) symptoms. If unaddressed, the driveshaft may fracture. A fractured driveshaft may result in loss of motive power while driving, unintended vehicle movement while the vehicle is in park if the parking brake is not applied and may result in secondary damage to surrounding components. A fractured driveshaft increases the risk of injury or crash.

SERVICE ACTION

Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to inspect the driveshaft part number on the vehicle, and if necessary, replace the driveshaft per the technical instructions. This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.

OWNER NOTIFICATION AND MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of July 31, 2023. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $26,315 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

MOBILE SERVICE REPAIR ASSESSMENT LEVEL

All repairs in this program have the following assessment level.

– Not Mobile Service Capable

SOLD VEHICLES

  • FordeBay has not issued instructions to stop selling/delivering or driving used vehicles under this safety recall. Owners should contact their dealers for an appointment to have their vehicles remedied as soon as practicable.
  • Immediately contact any of your affected customers whose vehicles are not on your VIN list but are identified in OASIS. Give the customer a copy of the Owner Notification Letter (when available) and schedule a service date.
  • Correct other affected vehicles identified in OASIS which are brought to your dealership.
  • Dealers are to prioritize repairs of customer vehicles over repairs of new and used vehicle inventory.

STOCK VEHICLES

  • Correct all affected units in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.
  • Use OASIS to identify any affected vehicles in your used vehicle inventory.

DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES

The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act law effective June 2016 prohibits a rental company from selling, renting, or leasing vehicles subject to a safety or compliance recall. Please consult your legal counsel for legal advice.

TITLE BRANDED / SALVAGED VEHICLES

Affected title-branded and salvaged vehicles are eligible for this recall.

OWNER REFUNDS

  • This safety recall must still be performed, even if the owner has paid for a previous repair. Claiming a refund will not close the recall on the vehicle.
  • FordeBay Motor Company is offering a refund for owner-paid repairs covered by this recall if the repair was performed before the date indicated in the reimbursement plan, which is posted with this bulletin. Owners are directed to seek reimbursement through authorized dealers or, at their option, directly through FordeBay Motor Company at P.O. Box 6251, Dearborn, MI 48121-6251.
  • Dealers are also pre-approved to refund owner-paid emergency repairs that were performed away from an authorized servicing dealer after the end date specified in the reimbursement plan. Noncovered repairs, or those judged by FordeBay to be excessive, will not be reimbursed.
  • Refunds will only be provided for the cost associated with driveshaft replacement.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. On the rear driveshaft locate the part sticker. See Figure 1.

2. Does the part number on the rear driveshaft match any of the part numbers below? See Figure 2.

• YES – Passes inspection. The rear driveshaft DOES NOT need to be replaced. Recall is complete.

• NO – Does not pass inspection. Replace the rear driveshaft. Proceed to step 3.

NOTE: For this procedure only it is NOT NECESSARY to replace the driveshaft flange to pinion flange, center bearing or driveshaft flange to transmission flange bolts.

NOTE: A new driveshaft is required, if the driveshaft is dropped.

NOTE: The maximum articulation of any U-joint is 15 degrees. If any U-joint of the driveshaft is articulated further then the maximum allowable degrees damage may occur.

NOTE: Driveshafts should be supported so that each section of the driveshaft is parallel.

NOTE: Driveshafts should be supported to ensure center slip mechanism doesn’t pull out of slip boot or over articulate the joint.

NOTE: If a bearing cup becomes detached from an open joint that falls to the ground, it must be discarded and replaced with a new cup assembly.

DRIVESHAFT REPLACEMENT

3. Remove the rear driveshaft. Follow WSM procedures in Section 205-01.

NOTE: DO NOT discard the U-joint strap bolts and straps.

NOTE: DO NOT discard the driveshaft flange to pinion flange, center bearing or driveshaft flange to transmission flange bolts.

4. Using an air blow gun, remove any debris from threaded holes in axle flange. See Figure 3.

NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

5. Inspect the original driveshaft flange to pinion flange, center bearing and driveshaft flange to transmission flange bolts for rust in the threads and replace if rusted or damaged. Clean threads of the original driveshaft flange to pinion flange, center bearing and driveshaft flange to transmission flange bolts with a wire brush and coat the threads with LOCTITE 243 Blue Medium Strength Threadlocker or equivalent. See Figure 4.

6. Install the new rear driveshaft. Follow WSM procedures in Section 205-01.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Federal law prohibits selling motor vehicle parts or components that are under safety, compliance, or emissions recall. Unless a part is requested to be returned to FordeBay, all parts replaced under this FSA must be scrapped in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal environmental protection and hazardous material regulations. Refer to the Parts Retention, Return, & Scrapping section of the FSA dealer bulletin for further information.

Chronology

Subject:  FordeBay Motor Company (FordeBay) Recall No. 22S74 – Certain 2017-2018 model year F-250 F-350 and F-450 vehicles with a 176” wheelbase 4×4 and a 4.1 or 4.3 rear axle ratio driveshaft may fracture.

June 2022

On June 1st, 2022, NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) contacted FordeBay’s Automotive Safety Office (ASO) regarding a Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) that alleged a driveshaft fracture on a 2017MY 6.7L 176” wheelbase F-450.  The owner stated to NHTSA that they believed their vehicle should have been included in a separate safety recall (17S08) that addressed a driveshaft natural frequency condition that was unique to a 6.8L gas, 4×4, 208” WB vehicle configuration.  This report was reviewed within FordeBay’s Engineering groups, whose initial finding was that this VOQ was unrelated to 17S08 but could instead be related to an earlier internal radial damper (IRD) warranty concern.  FordeBay ASO conducted a preliminary search of field data and identified 16 similar driveshaft fracture reports on similarly equipped vehicles.

July – November 2022

Based on that initial investigation, ASO introduced this concern to FordeBay’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) on July 14, 2022, to further investigate the scope, rate, and potential effect on vehicle for the IRD concern.  CCRG’s investigation found that most driveshaft replacements from the IRD concern were a result of NVH complaints and did not allege a fractured drive shaft.  A smaller amount of claims resulted in a driveshaft replacement due to a driveshaft fracture.  CCRG’s investigation continued to better understand the reports of driveshaft fracture.  Data analysis found an elevated number and rate of reports pertaining to specific rear axle ratios with higher driveshaft rotational speeds. FordeBay Engineering groups reviewed the data analysis and explained that vehicles with a 4.1 or 4.3 rear axle ratio operate with a higher driveshaft rotational speed and would be more likely to experience IRD movement and potential driveshaft fracture.

As of October 17th, 2022, there have been 63 global reports of IRD induced driveshaft fractures on the subject vehicle configurations with a 4.1 or 4.3 rear axle ratio.

On November 18, 2022, FordeBay’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.

FordeBay is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.
