NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V953
Manufacturer Ford Motor Company
Components SEAT BELTS
Potential Number of Units Affected 101,001
Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford
) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Lincoln
Aviator and 2020-2022 Lincoln
Corsair vehicles equipped with a Revel Audio System. When the driver’s seat belt is not buckled and the vehicle is started, the seat belt warning system may activate the audible warning chime for an insufficient amount of time of less than 4 seconds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicle | Model Year | Assembly Plant | Build Dates |
Aviator | 2020-2023 | Chicago | October 19, 2018 through December 13, 2022 |
Corsair | 2020-2022 | Louisville | January 7, 2019 through December 13, 2022 |
Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS and FSA VIN Lists.
REASON FOR THIS COMPLIANCE RECALL
Some of the affected vehicles may not conform to certain requirements specified by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, section 7.3, occupant crash protection. This regulation specifies that the driver’s seat belt assembly must be equipped with a warning system that activates an audible signal “of not less than 4 seconds and not more than 8 seconds” when the driver’s seat belt is not buckled and the vehicle ignition is moved to the “ON” or “START” position. In some of the affected vehicles, the seat belt warning system may activate an audible signal for a period of less than 4 seconds when the driver’s seat belt is not buckled and the vehicle is started. An audible signal that is activated for less than 4 seconds can result in decreased safety belt usage, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
SERVICE ACTION
Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to update the Audio Control Module (ACM). This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.
OWNER NOTIFICATION AND MAILING SCHEDULE
Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of February 6, 2023. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.
PLEASE NOTE:
Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $26,315 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

- Ford
has not issued instructions to stop selling/delivering or driving used vehicles under this compliance recall. Owners should contact their dealer for an appointment to have their vehicles remedied as soon as practicable.

1. Connect a battery charger to the 12V battery.
NOTE: Verify that the negative cable of the charger is installed on a chassis or engine ground, and not the 12 volt battery negative terminal to prevent the battery saver mode from activating on the vehicle.
NOTE: If the diagnostic software does not load or if the vehicle cannot be identified properly, make sure there is a good internet connection and the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) is properly connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
2. Log into Ford Diagnostic and Repair System (FDRS).
NOTE: Vehicle information is automatically retrieved by the diagnostic software and a Network Test is run. Vehicle identification data appears on the screen when this is complete.
3. Click ‘Read VIN from Vehicle’ or manually enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
NOTE: Available modules are shown on the left-hand side of the screen, and available procedures are listed on the right-hand side of the screen. Modules that are communicating are highlighted in green.
4. Select Toolbox tab.
5. From the list on the LH side of the screen, select the ACM.
6. From the list on the RH side of the screen, select ACM – Audio Front Control Module (ACM) Software Update.
7. Click RUN. Follow all on-screen instructions carefully.
8. From the list on the RH side of the screen, select Self-Test and click RUN.
9. Click the Run Selected Tests button in the lower right.
10. Click the Clear & Retest button at the top of the screen to clear DTCs in all modules.
11. Disconnect the battery charger from the 12V battery once the programming has completed.
Important Information for Module Programming
NOTE: When programming a module, use the following basic checks to ensure programming completes without errors.
- Make sure the 12V battery is fully charged before carrying out the programming steps and connect Ford
Diagnostic and Repair System (FDRS) scan tool to a power source.
NOTE: A good internet connection is necessary to identify the vehicle and to load the diagnostic software.
- Inspect Vehicle Communication Module II (VCM II
)/Vehicle Communication and Measurement Module (VCMM) and cables for any damage. Make sure scan tool connections are not interrupted during programming.
- A hardwired connection is strongly recommended.
- Turn off all unnecessary accessories (radio, heated/cooled seats, headlamps, interior lamps, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, etc.) and close doors.
- Disconnect/depower any aftermarket accessories (remote start, alarm, power inverter, CB radio,etc.).
- Follow all scan tool on-screen instructions carefully.
- Disable FDRS/scan tool sleep mode, screensaver, hibernation modes.
- Create all sessions Key On Engine Off (KOEO). Starting the vehicle before creating a session will cause errors within the programming inhale process.
Recovering a module when programming has resulted in a blank module
a. Disconnect the VCMII or VCMM from the Data Link Connector (DLC) and your PC.
b. After ten seconds, reconnect the VCMII/VCMM to the DLC and the PC. Launch FDRS. The VCMII/VCMM icon should turn green in the bottom right corner of the screen. If it does not, troubleshoot the FDRS to VCM connection.
c. If you are using the same FDRS as the initial programming attempt, select the appropriate VIN from the Vehicle Identification menu. If you are using a different FDRS, select “Read VIN from Vehicle” and proceed through the Network Test.
d. In the Toolbox menu, navigate to the failed module and Download/Run Programmable Module Installation (PMI). Follow the on-screen prompts. When asked if the original module is installed, select “No” and continue through the installation application.
e. Once programming has completed, a screen may list additional steps required to complete the programming process. Make sure all applicable steps are followed in order.
Chronology :
On November 22, 2022, an issue pertaining to the number of audible seatbelt reminder warning chimes on a 2022MY Lincoln Aviator PHEV was brought to Ford
’s Critical Concern Review Group for review.
The potential concern was initially identified on October 27, 2022, by Ford’s quality team in South Korea during validation of a corrective action for an incorrect seatbelt warning system configuration.
November 2022 – Product Development and the Automotive Safety Office evaluated the performance of seatbelt reminder system on various combinations of powertrain and audio system for Lincoln Aviator in an attempt to reproduce the concern. Based on Ford
’s initial vehicle evaluations, it was discovered that some Lincoln
Aviator PHEV vehicles with a Revel audio system exhibited an initial chime duration of less than 4 seconds.
December 2022 – The engineering team and audio supplier conducted a design of experiments to gain a better understanding of root cause and scope of concern. It was determined that the main contributor was the audio system software and the potential scope was limited to vehicles equipped with the Revel audio system. The Revel audio system was introduced on the 2020MY Lincoln Aviator and Corsair. Further seatbelt reminder system evaluations were conducted at Ford
assembly plants on current production vehicles with the Revel audio system. It was concluded that 2020-2023MY Lincoln
Aviator and 2020-2022MY Corsair vehicles could experience the symptom of a chime duration less than 4 seconds.
As of December 16, 2022, Ford is not aware of any warranty claims or NHTSA Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQs) related to this condition.
On December 16, 2022, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

SERVICE ACTION DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this compliance recall. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers by the end of Q1 2023 when it is anticipated that software will be available to support this compliance recall. IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening an RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall. CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION Owners of record will be notified via first-class mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers. PLEASE NOTE: Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery. Ó Copyright 2023 Ford Motor Company DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act law effective June 2016 prohibits a rental company from selling, renting or leasing vehicles subject to a safety or compliance recall. Please consult your legal counsel for legal advice. QUESTIONS & ASSISTANCE For questions and assistance, contact the Special Service Support Center (SSSC) via the SSSC Web Contact Site. NOTE: A good internet connection is necessary to identify the vehicle and to load the diagnostic software. • Inspect Vehicle Communication Module II (VCM II)/Vehicle Communication and Measurement Module (VCMM) and cables for any damage. Make sure scan tool connections are not interrupted during programming. • A hardwired connection is strongly recommended. • Turn off all unnecessary accessories (radio, heated/cooled seats, headlamps, interior lamps, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, etc.) and close doors. • Disconnect/depower any aftermarket accessories (remote start, alarm, power inverter, CB radio,etc.). • Follow all scan tool on-screen instructions carefully. • Disable FDRS/scan tool sleep mode, screensaver, hibernation modes. • Create all sessions Key On Engine Off (KOEO). Starting the vehicle before creating a session will cause errors within the programming inhale process. Recovering a module when programming has resulted in a blank module a.
