TSB 14-0019 LACK OF AIR CONDITIONING AND/OR ENGINE OVERHEAT CONDITION – BUILT ON OR AFTER 9/1/2010

FORD: 2011-2012 Taurus
LINCOLN: 2011-2012 MKS
FORD: 2011-2012 Explorer, Flex
LINCOLN: 2011-2012 MKT

This article supersedes TSB 13-12-21 to update the vehicle application.

ISSUE:

Some 2011 and 2012 Explorer, Taurus, Flex, MKS and MKT vehicles built on or after 9/1/2010 and equipped with dual engine cooling fans may exhibit a lack of air conditioning (AC) performance while the vehicle is stationary or moving at slow speeds, and/or an overheat condition.

Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0217, P1299 and P1285 may be present.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Using the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) with a release of 87.05 and higher or Scan Tool, check the powertrain control module (PCM) for a later calibration. Is a later calibration available for the PCM?
    1. No – proceed to Step 2.
    1. Yes – reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS or Ford J2534 release 87.05 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. Proceed to Step 2.
  1. Using IDS or Scan Tool, select Data Logger, select Output State Control, command the Cooling Fan Speed Desired PID to High speed (FAN_CTRL# or FAN_DSD# – above 90%) for 1 minute and verify cooling fan operation. Are the cooling fans operating?
    1. No – please be sure to check the fan assembly for being original equipment manufacturer (OEM). (Figure 1)

      1. For Taurus and MKS vehicles, replace the cooling fan motor and control module assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-03 and then proceed to Step 5.
      1. For Explorer, Flex and MKT vehicles, proceed to Step 3.
    1. Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 for normal diagnostics.
  1. Remove the cooling fan motor and control module assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03.
  1. Remove the cooling fan control module from the original cooling fan motor assembly and transfer onto the new cooling fan motor assembly. Tighten screw to 7 Nm (60 lb-in).
  1. Install the new cooling fan motor assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03.
  1. Check coolant level and top off as necessary using the correct coolant type. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03.

Service Information & Reprogramming

Software necessary to program electronic modules to the latest calibration level, perform module initialization (PATS), and set Programmable Parameters on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

Ford Module Programming (FMP) is a software application that allows subscribers to program electronic modules on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. It can be used for:

  • Reprogramming emission-related (OBDII) modules on some vehicles manufactured in 1995 and all vehicles manufactured from 1996 to the present
  • Reprogramming or reconfiguring non-emission-related modules on many vehicles (UBP and MS-CAN not supported)

In addition, module initialization (PATS) functions such as Keycode Erase/Reprogram and PCM Parameter Reset can be done using this application.
