Summary

Some 2020-2022 Explorer/Aviator Hybrid vehicles built on or before 11-Apr-2022 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with only diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1A0C stored in the PCM. This may be due to the software in the battery energy control module (BECM). To correct the condition follow the Service Procedure to reprogram the BECM, powertrain control module (PCM), and other modules in a coordinated flash.

Issue: Some 2020-2022 Explorer/Aviator Hybrid vehicles built on or before 11-Apr-2022 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with only diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1A0C stored in the PCM. This may be due to the software in the battery energy control module (BECM). To correct the condition follow the Service Procedure to reprogram the BECM, powertrain control module (PCM), and other modules in a coordinated flash.

 

Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet the following criteria:

  • 2020-2022 Explorer/Aviator Hybrid
  • Built on or before 11-Apr-2022
  • Illuminated MIL with only DTC P1A0C in the PCM

 

Service Procedure

1. Connect a battery charger to the 12-volt battery.

NOTE: To prevent the battery saver mode from activating on the vehicle, make sure the negative cable of the charger is installed on a chassis or engine ground, and not the 12-volt battery negative terminal. Do not have the vehicle plugged into the high voltage battery charger during programming. This can cause incorrect module programming. Make sure only the 12-volt battery charger is installed.

2. Reprogram the PCM using the latest software level of the FordeBay Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS).

3. Check the availability for software updates on the following modules and update as required:

  • Secondary on-board diagnostic control module (SOBDM)
  • Secondary on-board diagnostic control module B (SOBDM-B)
  • Secondary on-board diagnostic control module C (SOBDM-C)
  • Battery energy control module (BECM)
  • Battery energy control module B (BECMB)
  • Anti-lock brake system (ABS) module

NOTE: Only one module may be updated at a time.

Summary

Some 2020-2022 Aviator Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL and a Stop Safely Now message with only DTC P1A0C stored in the PCM. This may be due to the software in the battery energy control module (BECM). The condition occurs when the vehicle is started when the charging cord is connected. To prevent the condition from occurring, disconnect the charger prior to starting the vehicle. If the charger is not disconnected before starting, the ignition will need to be cycled before driving. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently working on a solution for this condition that is expected in May-2022. No additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Monitor OASIS for updates and schedule a service appointment for customers once the repair becomes available.

Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) / FordeBay Diagnosis & Repair System (FDRS)

For use with VCM I, VCM IIeBay, VMM and VCMM hardware devices only. The complete factory FordeBay Motor Company vehicle diagnostic tool that provides complete dealership level vehicle diagnostic coverage for all 1996 to present Ford, LincolneBay and MercuryeBay vehicles. The IDS software includes time based access to the IDS software, software updates and calibration files.

 

Ford J2534 Diagnostic Software (FJDS) / Ford Diagnosis & Repair System (FDRS)

For use with compatible J2534 hardware devices. FJDS software provides Ford Module Programming functionality that covers 1996 to present Ford, LincolneBay and MercuryeBay module reprogramming functions, plus complete dealership level vehicle diagnostic software for all 2018 to present Ford and LincolneBay vehicles. The FJDS software license includes time based access to the FJDS software, software updates and calibration files.
