2.3L ENGINE – HARSH SHIFT/BUMP OR HOOT NOISE DURING TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH APPLY – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 9/19/2014 |

2015 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.3L and built on or before 9/19/2014 may exhibit a harsh shift or bump felt after the 2-3 shift 35-40 Km/h (22-25 MPH) or exhibit a hoot-type noise during a light throttle tip-in at approximately 48-56 Km/h (30–35 MPH).
SERVICE PROCEDURE
To verify the customer concern of a harsh bump or hoot noise the vehicle must be at operating temp.
- To evaluate the torque convertor clutch (TCC) for a harsh bump, select the drive (D) shift button, accelerate at a light throttle to achieve the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts (at 2300 RPM). Holding that same accelerator pedal position, observe the TCC apply using the tachometer. An acceptable TCC apply event will be approximately 35-40 Km/h (22-25 MPH) with little to no feel and a slow and steady drop in RPM on the tachometer.
- Is a harsh shift bump felt after the 2-3 shift as the TCC applied?
- Yes – replace the torque convertor.
- No – proceed to Step 3.
- Evaluate the torque convertor clutch (TCC) for a hoot noise. Select the sport (S) shift button and use the manual shift paddles to upshift to 5th gear at 64 Km/h (40 MPH). Remain in S5 and decrease vehicle speed to 56 Km/h (35 MPH) and observe the engine RPM at 1500 RPM. With the torque convertor clutch (TCC) applied, perform a quick light throttle tip-in to evaluate for hoot.
- Was a hoot noise heard during the tip-in?
- Yes – replace the torque convertor.
- No – this procedure does not apply. Refer to WSM for normal diagnosis.
