ISSUE:

Some 2012-2015 Explorer and 2013-2015 Taurus vehicles equipped with 2.0L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engines and built on or before 10/5/2014 may exhibit a lack of power and a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2111, P2101 and/or P2112 stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory, in ambient temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F).

 

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Does the condition occur in ambient temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F)?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
    1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnosis.
  1. Using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent, check for DTCs.
  1. Are DTC P2111, P2101 or P2112 stored in PCM memory and, in some instances, does the vehicle exhibit a lack of power?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 4.
    1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to PC/ED manual for normal diagnosis.
  1. Remove and replace the charge air cooler (CAC) tube and screen assembly from the CAC to the throttle body with the revised part. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-12.
