1.6L GTDI – DTCS P0106, P0131, P0172, P061B, P2196, P0236 OR ENGINE FAULT SERVICE ENGINE NOW MESSAGE WITHOUT DTCS – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 10/24/13

FORD: 2013-2014 Escape

2013-2014 Escape vehicles equipped with 1.6L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engines and built on or before 10/24/2013 may exhibit difficult to start, runs rough, crank no-start, lack of power, loss of RPM or hesitation concerns with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0106, P0131, P0172, P061B, P2196 and P0236.

An Engine Fault Service Engine Now message may also be displayed without any DTCs in self-test.

These conditions may be caused by a wiring concern in the signal return splices.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or Scan Tool, check for DTCs.
  1. Confirm the vehicle ignition switch is in the off position. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable. Install the ground wire between the disconnected positive battery cable and vehicle body ground terminal. Grounding the disconnected positive battery cable to the vehicle body ground terminal prevents damage to the powertrain control module (PCM) while performing a signal return splice soldering repair procedure.
  1. Does the vehicle exhibit a driveability concern with DTCs P0106, P0131, P0172, P061B, P2196 and P0236?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 4.
    1. No – proceed to Step 5.
  1. Replace the signal return splices with 0.75 mm (18 AWG) wire using the solder method. The affected splice numbers are S123 and S178. Refer to Wiring Diagram.
    1. For 2013 vehicles, splice S123 can be in one of two locations. Splice S123 will have 5 circuits that are multi colored one green/violet (FRP), two white/brown (MAP and Sig Rtn to PCM), one brown/green (ECT) and one green/brown (TFT). (Figure 1)

Splice S178Figure 1

    1. For 2014 vehicles, the splice S123 will have 6 circuits that are multi colored one green/violet (FRP), one white/brown (Sig Rtn to PCM) , one brown/green (ECT), one green/brown (TFT) and two blue/green (MAP and CHT). Refer to 2014 Wiring Diagram, Section 151-5. (Figure 1 Lower Arrow)
      1. Remove enough harness wrap to locate and replace the splice.
      1. Solder before sealing the repair with heat shrink tube.
    2. Splice S178 is located under the air box where the 12A581 harness turns downward near the transmission cover. It will have 3 circuits that are gray/blue. (Figure 2 Item 1)

Splice S178 Figure 2

    1. Raise the vehicle.
    1. Remove the lower splash shield.
    1. Remove the nut at the transmission oil pan. (Figure 2 Item 2)
    1. Remove the charge air cooler tube.
    1. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector. (Figure 2, Item 3)
    1. Disconnect the white plastic harness bracket. (Figure 2, Item 4)
    1. Disconnect the harness from the black harness clip. (Figure 2, Item 5)
    1. Pull down the harness to gain access to S178.
    1. Remove enough harness wrap to locate and replace the splice. Replace the signal return splice with 0.75 mm (18 AWG) wire using the solder method. (Figure 3)

Splice S178 Figure 3

    1. Solder before sealing the repair with heat shrink tube.
    1. Reverse Steps 1 through 8 for installation.
  1. If the vehicle exhibits a driveability concern along with an engine fault Service Engine Now message in the instrument panel cluster (IPC) message center without any DTCs stored in PCM memory, perform a wiggle test on the PCM engine harness while monitoring MAP, TCBP and BARO Sensors PSI with IDS. If signal noise or VREF pull down is confirmed during harness wiggle test, replace signal return splices with 0.75 mm (18 AWG) wire using the solder method per Step 4. (Figures 1-3)
  2. Reconnect battery cables.
