TSB 16-0088 | WIND NOISE AT THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER A-PILLAR TO WINDSHIELD AREA – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 3/21/2016 |
Publication Date: May 27, 2016 |
LINCOLN![]() | 2016 MKX |
ISSUE:
Some 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles built on or before 3/21/2016 may exhibit wind noise at the driver and/or passenger A-pillar to windshield area. The noise is most noticeable at highway speeds. This may be due to the windshield A-pillar moulding not being properly adhered to the A-pillar sheet metal and/or from the shape of the channel that runs inside the windshield moulding.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct this condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Apply masking tape to cover the edge of the windshield and A-pillar moulding. Road test the vehicle. Does the vehicle exhibit wind noise from the windshield A-pillar?
- Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04 for normal diagnostics.
- No – proceed to Step 2.
- On the back of a regular business card, measure 10 mm (13/32”) from the short edge and draw a line.
- On the passenger and driver side of the vehicle, measure approximately 25 mm ( 1″) dimension A, and insert the business card between the windshield moulding and the metal A-pillar at the three points. At any point, can the business card be inserted more than 10 mm (13/32″)? (Figure 1)
Figure 1 – 16-0088- Yes – proceed to Step 4.
- No – proceed to Step 5.
- Replace the windshield. Refer to WSM, Section 501-11.
- Test fit the right stuffer on the passenger side of the vehicle.
- Using a sliding caliper or other suitable measuring device, position the stuffer so the bottom of the stuffer is approximately 6 mm (1/4”) from the cowl panel grille, dimension A. (Figure 2)
Figure 2 – 16-0088 - When properly positioned, the stuffer should be flush or under flush to the windshield moulding. If the stuffer is sticking above the windshield moulding, move the stuffer up towards the roof until the stuffer is positioned correctly.
- Using a suitable marking device, mark dimension A on the windshield moulding where the bottom of the stuffer is to be located for best fit. (Figure 2)
- Using a sliding caliper or other suitable measuring device, position the stuffer so the bottom of the stuffer is approximately 6 mm (1/4”) from the cowl panel grille, dimension A. (Figure 2)
- Apply 3M Adhesion Promoter or equivalent to the entire inside channel of the windshield moulding, making sure the inside top of the windshield moulding channel is well coated. (Figure 3)
Figure 3 – 16-0088- Allow adhesion promoter to dry at room temperature for at least three minutes before installing the stuffer.
- Remove the protective backing from the adhesive tape on the stuffer moulding.
- Starting the stuffer at the bottom of the windshield moulding, at the mark made in Step 5c, insert the bottom of the stuffer into the windshield moulding so that the stuffer is snug against the inside top edge of the windshield moulding. (Figure 4)
Figure 4 – 16-0088- Continue the stuffer installation by slowly rotating it into place. Apply finger pressure to set the tape to the windshield moulding. (Figure 5)
Figure 5 – 16-0088
- Continue the stuffer installation by slowly rotating it into place. Apply finger pressure to set the tape to the windshield moulding. (Figure 5)
- Use Motorcraft Ultra-Clear Spray Glass Cleaner or equivalent to remove any adhesion promoter residue that may be left on the windshield or windshield moulding.
- Repeat Steps 5 through 9 to install the stuffer on the driver side of the vehicle.
