Service Procedure
1. Does the shifter move into the first and second gear positions when attempting to engage these gears but the vehicle will not move?
(1). Yes – proceed to Step 2.
(2). No – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-03A for normal diagnostics.
2. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to WSM, Section 308-03A.
3. Disassemble the transmission to the point where the 1-2 shift fork and second gear can be accessed. Refer to the transmission disassembly procedure in WSM, Section 308-03A. Perform Steps 1 and 2 of this procedure then perform Steps 10 through 29. Do not proceed to Step 30.
(1). Steps 14 and 15 are only necessary for 2018 vehicles.
(2). In Step 17, only remove the shift rail detents in the rear transmission housing. It is not necessary to remove the other shift rail detents.
4. Replace the first/second shift fork, the mainshaft second gear, and the first/second gear synchronizer hub and sleeve. Refer to WSM, Section 308-03A.
5. Reassemble the transmission. Refer to the transmission assembly procedure in WSM, Section 308-03A and perform Steps 18 through 52.
(1). Steps 46 and 47 are only necessary for 2018 vehicles.
