Summary

Some 2017-2020 Continental vehicles may experience driver seatbelts locking up and difficult to extend. This may be due to the seatbelt retractor contacting the B-pillar sheet metal causing the seat belt retractor to sit on an angle. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to add clearance between the seatbelt retractor and B-pillar sheet metal.

Issue: Some 2017–2020 Continental vehicles may experience driver seatbelts locking up and difficult to extend. This may be due to the seatbelt retractor contacting the B-pillar sheet metal causing the seatbelt retractor to sit on an angle. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to add clearance between the seatbelt retractor and B-pillar sheet metal.

 

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

  • 2017-2020 Continental
  • Driver seatbelt locking up and difficult to extend

NOTE: Part quantity refers to the number of that service part number required, which may be different than the number of individual pieces. Service part numbers contain 1 piece unless otherwise stated. “As Needed” indicates the part is required but the number may vary or is not a whole number; parts can be billed out as non-whole numbers, including less than 1.

Service Procedure

1. Remove the driver side lower B-pillar trim panel. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-05.

2. Inspect the lower corner of the driver seatbelt retractor, near the seatbelt pretensioner, for evidence of interference with the B-pillar metal flange. This will prevent the seatbelt retractor from fully seating into B-pillar mounting area. (Figures 1-2)

 

3. Was interference found between the seatbelt retractor pretensioner assembly and the B-pillar sheet metal?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 4.

(2). No – this article does not apply. Refer to WSM, Section 501-20A for normal diagnostics.

4. Remove the seatbelt retractor and pretensioner assembly only. It is not necessary to remove the upper B-pillar trim, the seat belt D-ring or seatbelt anchor bolt. Refer to WSM, Section 501-20A.

5. Using a suitable tool, remove approximately 2 mm (0.0787 in) of the B-pillar flange overlap to allow clearance between the seatbelt retractor and B-pillar sheet metal. (Figure 3)

 

6. Apply corrosion protection to the areas where the existing paint has been removed. Refer to WSM, Section 501-25.

7. Reassemble the vehicle. Refer to WSM, Section 501-20A and 501-05.
