TSB 17-0057 6.7L – ILLUMINATED MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P20E8 – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 12-MAY-2017
Publication Date: August 14, 2017

FORD: 2017 F-Super Duty

This article supersedes TSB 17-0020 to update the vehicle line application, Service Procedure and Part List.

ISSUE:

Some 2017 F-Super Duty vehicles built on or before 12-May-2017 and equipped with a 6.7L engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P20E8 in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory. This may be due to air trapped in the reductant lines causing the reductant pump and heater assembly to not build sufficient system pressure.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Connect the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent scan tool to the data link connector (DLC). Check for DTCs. Is P20E8 the only DTC stored in the PCM memory?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
    1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
  1. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release 106.01 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the internet when entering module programming to obtain the latest updates. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE’S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION’S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

  1. Check the vehicle build date. Was the vehicle built on or before 20-Dec-2016?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 4.
    1. No – repair is complete.
  1. Replace the reductant pump and heater assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-08.
  1. Clear all DTCs.
  1. Prime the new reductant pump and heater as follows:
    1. Disconnect the reductant pressure line from the reductant injector and place the line in a clean suitable container. Refer to WSM, Section 303-08.
    1. Using IDS, perform the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) visual leak check by selecting Toolbox > Powertrain > Service Functions > SCR system > SCR visual leak check. Run the test for two minutes.
    1. Connect the reductant pressure line to the reductant injector. Refer to WSM, Section 303-08.
    1. Perform SCR visual leak check to verify no leaks are present.
