SSM 46984 – 2016-2018 Various Vehicles – Growling And/Or Scraping Noise After Brake Rotor Cover Removal

Some 2016-2018 Ford and Lincoln vehicles with factory installed brake rotor covers may exhibit a growling and/or scraping noise coming from the wheel area after the brake rotor covers were removed as part of the pre-delivery inspection.

This may be due to the brake caliper spring becoming dislodged during the rotor cover removal process and rubbing against the wheel.

To avoid this, the brake rotor covers must be removed from the inboard side of the wheel without the use of tools and the brake caliper should be inspected to make sure nothing was dislodged.

Instructions for cover removal can be found under the PTS PDI tab, Brake Rotor Cover Removal Process; pages 6 and 8 have video links to show the proper procedure using no tools.

Damage to the wheels due to improper wheel cover removal is not covered under warranty.
