Illuminated MIL with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0138 and/or P0158 – 2014-2015 Ford Explorer & Taurus

FORD:

2014-2015 Explorer, Taurus

 

ISSUE:

Some 2014-2015 Explorer and Taurus vehicles equipped with a 3.5L or 3.7L Ti-VCT engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0138 and/or P0158 stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory.

 

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure Steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Connect the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent scan tool to the data link connector (DLC). Check for DTCs. Is P0138 and/or P0158 stored in the PCM?
   1. Yes – replace the affected catalyst monitor sensor (CMS). Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-14.
      1. DTC P0138 – bank 1 CMS.
      2. DTC P0158 – bank 2 CMS.
   2. No – this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual for normal diagnostics.
