Publication Date: September 14, 2016

FORD: 2016 Explorer

ISSUE:

Some 2016 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.3L GTDI engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with a lack of power and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0299. This may be due to the turbocharger wastegate actuator rod coming disconnected from the wastegate.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Using the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or an equivalent scan tool, check for DTCs. Is DTC P0299 present in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
    1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
  1. Inspect the turbocharger wastegate actuator rod for proper engagement to the wastegate lever. Is the turbocharger wastegate actuator rod properly attached and the retaining clip in place?
    1. Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to the PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
    1. No – proceed to Step 3.
  1. Remove the engine undershield. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-02.
