NOISE – “POPPING” OR “OIL CANNING” NOISE FROM DRIVER’S FOOTWELL AREA |
A “popping” or “oil canning” noise may be coming from the driver’s footwell area, approximately 152-203mm (6-8″) rearward of where the driver’s heel would rest when operating the accelerator pedal.
ACTION:
“Peen” the floor pan area. This should reduce the possibility of noise.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
WARNING: FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROPER SERVICE PROCEDURES MAY RESULT IN AN INADVERTENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHEN SERVICING THE FLOOR PAN.
- Disconnect the battery and wait 2 minutes. This will deactivate the air bag module and prevent an inadvertent air bag deployment.
- Pull back the carpet covering the affected area. Refer to Figure 1 for approximate location.
- Using a 1 lb. hammer, strike the floor pan and form approximately a 25mm (1″) long cross-car stiffening bead in the area of oil canning. Refer to Figure 2.
- Verify that pressure in the affected area no longer causes the oil canning effect.
- Reinstall carpeting.
- Reconnect battery.
