REAR BRAKE NOISE WITH UNEVEN REAR BRAKE PAD WEAR – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 10/31/2015

FORD: 2015-2016 Transit

ISSUE:

Some 2015-2016 Transit vehicles may exhibit uneven rear brake pad wear which may result in a metal to metal brake noise.

This may be caused by a misalignment of the caliper housing to the brake disc and reduced running clearance due to the orientation of the unique upper and lower caliper sliding pins.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Inverting the brake caliper anchor plate from its original position relocates the rubber bushed sliding pin and its larger bore to the top reducing the risk of caliper misalignment and reduced running clearance.

  1. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-02.
  1. Inspect both rear brake caliper anchor plates in the area of the mounting bolts. Is the machined identifier located at the bottom mounting bolt? (Figure 1)

    Figure 1

    1. Yes – this procedure does not apply. The brake caliper anchor plate has already been inverted to have the rubber bushed pin and the larger pin bore at the top. Refer to WSM Section 206-00 for normal diagnostics.
    1. No – proceed to Step 3.
  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to WSM, Section 204-04.
  1. Inspect the rear brake pads. Does the vehicle exhibit uneven rear brake pad wear where the outer brake pad (wheel side) is worn below specification, while the friction material of the inner brake pad thickness (piston side) is at least 4 mm (0.157 inches) greater than the outer pad? (Figure 2)

    1. Yes – proceed to Step 5.
    1. No – this procedure does not apply since uneven wear does not exist. Refer to WSM, Section 206-00 for normal diagnostics.
  1. Remove both rear brake caliper anchor plates and install on the opposite side of the vehicle. Move the left side plate to the right side and the right side plate to the left side. Refer to WSM, Section 206-04.
    1. Inspect rear brake discs and machine or replace as necessary.
    1. Install new brake pads during reassembly.
  1. Reinstall the rear wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to WSM, Section 204-04.
