Ford Motor Company (Ford) Recall No. 24S15 Chronology
CERTAIN 2023-2024 MODEL YEAR FORD BRONCO VEHICLES WITH FOUR DOORS – CHILD SAFETY LOCK INOPERATIVE
Date of Submission: March 08, 2024
Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision.
December 2023
On December 21, 2023, Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) opened an investigation into reports from the vehicle assembly plant of non-functional child safety locks on left-hand rear doors of 2023 model year (MY) Bronco four-door vehicles.
The CCRG investigation found that the first non-functional child safety lock was identified during a quality audit at the vehicle assembly plant on December 15, 2023. In that audit, the left-hand rear door of a 2023 MY Bronco vehicle was opened using the inside door handle with the child safety lock in the “ON” position. All vehicles at the plant were inspected for this condition, with 1.6% exhibiting the condition on rear left-hand child safety locks.
Enhanced inspection protocols were also implemented at the rear door latch module supplier because the rear door latch module includes the child safety lock mechanism. The supplier inspection found that the child safety locks were functional prior to installation in the sheet metal doors.
Subsequent investigation and vehicle audits were undertaken to identify potential system interaction contributors that could lead to a door being opened from the inside with the child safety lock in the “ON” position.
January 2024 – February 2024
Further CCRG investigation determined that a sheet metal fixture improvement was completed on September 13, 2023, at the door sheet metal stamping plant to improve door flushness. However, the change inadvertently caused the location of the latch reinforcement to shift, which resulted in an interference condition. Ford’s analysis determined that the interference could deflect the latch frame plate and inner release lever, allowing the child lock to rotate when the inside release handle is pulled.
No child lock concerns were found on rear right-hand doors. The door fit adjustments only affect the left-hand doors; right-hand doors have greater internal latch clearance between the inner release lever and child lock coupling lever.
There are no warranty or field reports associated with this concern.
On March 1, 2024, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

Descriptive Information : This condition affects certain Bronco vehicles equipped with four doors. Child safety locks are on the rear edge
of the rear doors on Bronco four-door vehicles. Bronco vehicles equipped with two doors do not have child
safety locks.
Ford’s team reviewed plant records to determine the population of affected parts. The child safety locks on left
rear doors of Bronco vehicles built between November 28, 2023, and December 17, 2023, may not function as
intended due to insufficient clearance between the latch reinforcement bracket and door latch release lever
pivot.
These vehicles are not produced in VIN order. Information as to the applicability of this action to specific
vehicles can best be obtained by either calling Ford’s toll-free line (1-866-436-7332) or by contacting a local
Ford or Lincoln dealer who can obtain specific information regarding the vehicles from the Ford On-line

Description of the Defect : The left-hand rear door may be opened from the inside of the vehicle
when the child safety lock is in the “ON” position. Proper function of the child safety lock prevents opening of
the rear door from inside the vehicle with the child safety lock “ON.” FMVSS 1 : NR
FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : The left-hand rear door may be opened from the inside of the vehicle, despite indication of the child safety lock in the “ON” position, increasing the risk of injury to an unrestrained second
row occupant.
Description of the Cause : An adjustment in the manufacturing process to improve door flushness inadvertently
caused the location of the left-hand rear door latch reinforcement bracket to shift. As a result, when the child
safety lock is in the “ON” position, the inner release lever may contact the child lock coupling lever when the
inside door handle is pulled, allowing the door to open. Identification of Any Warning
