Motor Company (Ford
) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with a 12.1-inch Integrated Computer Screen (ICS). When the Display On/Off Button is used to turn the display to “Off” prior to placing the vehicle in reverse, the backup camera rearview image will not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the ICS software, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed May 17, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 29, 2023. Owners may contact Ford
customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford

REASON FOR THIS COMPLIANCE RECALL
The affected vehicles do not conform to the requirements specified by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111 Sections 5.5.3 Response Time and 5.5.6 Default View. When the customer turns the Display On/Off button to “off” prior to placing the vehicle in reverse, the backup camera image will not appear on the display.
SERVICE ACTION
DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this compliance recall. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers by June 30, 2023, when it is anticipated that software information and repair instructions will be available to support this compliance recall.
IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening an RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of record will be notified via first-class mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.
PLEASE NOTE:
Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $26,315 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery.

On March 21, 2023, Ford
’s Critical Concern Review Group reviewed a concern related to Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with a 12.1-inch Integrated Computer Screen (ICS). When the customer uses the Display On/Off Button to turn the ICS display off and subsequently places the vehicle in reverse, the backup camera rearview image does not appear on the center-stack display.
Ford
’s Feature Systems engineering team discovered this issue during Feature Testing on March 8, 2023.
Between March 22, 2023 and April 21, 2023 the CCRG reviewed data sources for this concern, conducted vehicle system testing, analyzed feature and compliance testing, and worked with the supplier to better understand this issue.
As of April 3, 2023, Ford
is aware of 0 warranty claims, and 0 VOQs related to this issue. Ford
is not aware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this concern.
On April 21, 2023 Ford
’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
