2016 Explorer Police Utility Vehicles – Rear Liftgate Release Switch Activation

2016 Explorer Police Utility vehicles are equipped with an independent rear liftgate locking feature.

To use the exterior rear liftgate release switch the ignition switch must be in the RUN or START position and the interior liftgate overhead console switch must be pulled, or by pressing the liftgate release button on key fobs equipped with a button.

Once the rear liftgate release switch is activated it will remain active for 45 seconds.

The rear liftgate release switch will become disabled after the 45 seconds have expired or after the liftgate has been opened and closed.

This function operates independent of either the door trim lock/unlock switches or the fob lock/ unlock buttons.

This is a Police application only and was implemented as a result of a request from the Police Advisory Board.

  1. I have the 2017 Explorer as an administrator vehicle, is there a way to bypass this feature and allow the unlock button in the car and remote to work in unlocking the tailgate?
