Certain 2010 through 2011 Model Year Milan and MKZ Vehicles Tail Lamp Assembly Extended Coverage

PROGRAM TERMS

This program extends the coverage of the tail lamp assemblies to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first.  If a vehicle has already exceeded either the time or mileage limits, this coverage will last through October 1, 2015.  Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.

VEHICLES COVERED BY THIS PROGRAM

Vehicle Line Model Year Assembly Plant  Build Dates
Milan 2010-2011 Hermosillo September 22, 2008 through December 10, 2010
MKZ 2010-2011 Hermosillo September 29, 2008 through June 4, 2011

REASON FOR PROVIDING ADDITIONAL COVERAGE

In some of the affected vehicles, the light emitting diodes (LEDs) in one or both outer tail lamps may not illuminate when the brake is applied, or may remain in the brake intensity mode when the brake is not applied.  The tail lamps are affected independently of one another, and the center high mount stop lamp and turn signals are unaffected.

SERVICE ACTION

If an affected vehicle exhibits this condition, dealers are to replace the improperly functioning tail lamp or tail lamps.  Coverage under this program begins after the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.  This service must be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner Letters are expected to be mailed the week of March 23, 2015. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that experience tail lamp failure, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

STOCK VEHICLES

Do not perform this program unless the affected vehicle exhibits the covered condition.

SOLD VEHICLES

Only owners with affected vehicles that exhibit the covered condition will be directed to dealers for repairs.

VEHICLES WITH CANCELLED WARRANTY

Affected vehicles which have had the Entire Vehicle Warranty or Electrical Warranty cancelled are not eligible for this service action. Warranty cancellation is identified in the “Warning” area on OASIS.

OWNER REFUNDS

  • Ford Motor Company is offering a refund for owner-paid repairs covered by this program if the repair was performed before the date of the Owner Notification Letter. This refund offer expires October 1, 2015.
  • Dealers are also pre-approved to refund owner-paid emergency repairs that were performed away from an authorized servicing dealer after the date of the Owner Notification Letter. There is no expiration date for emergency repair refunds. Non-covered repairs, or those judged by Ford to be excessive, will not be reimbursed.
  • Refunds will only be provided for the cost associated with outer tail lamp assembly replacement for LED failure. Repairs for damaged tail lamps are not eligible for refunds.

RENTAL VEHICLES

The use of rental vehicles is not approved for this program.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR TAIL LAMPS ARE FUNCTIONING NORMALLY

Milan TAIL LAMP VISUAL INSPECTION

Your vehicle is equipped with rear outer tail lamps that are illuminated by light emitting diodes (LEDs). Each lamp contains seven rows of LEDs in an arch pattern. The smallest two “outboard” rows contain fewer LEDs, and will always appear dimmer than the five larger “inboard” rows of LEDs.

To determine if the lamps are operating correctly, inspect each lamp with the park lamps and the brake pedal in the positions described below and compare to the illustrations provided. You may need a second person to help operate the brake pedal.

NOTE: The right hand (passenger side) lamp is shown, but the left hand lamp is similar. Be sure to check both lamps for correct operation.

NO LEDs ILLUMINATED

ALL ROWS ILLUMINATED AT LOWER INTENSITY

FIVE INBOARD ROWS ILLUMINATED AT HIGHER INTENSITY, TWO OUTBOARD ROWS NOT ILLUMINATED

FIVE INBOARD ROWS ILLUMINATED AT HIGHER INTENSITY, TWO OUTBOARD ROWS ILLUMINATED AT LOWER INTENSITY

If the LEDs illuminate as indicated in the illustrations, the tail lamps are functioning normally and no service is needed.

If any of the steps reveal that the LEDs are not illuminating correctly, please contact your dealer and request a service appointment under extended coverage program 14M03.

  1. I have a 2010 Mercury Milan with 70238 miles on it. The right rear tail light is bright with out stepping on the brake. Is it still covered?

  2. I read above coverage ends at 10yr/150K, but also “Coverage under this program begins after the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. ”

Could the warranty start date and expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty be different?

I had the left light covered at approx 120k, now the right is bad, my Milan has approx 159k, thoughts?

    THANK YOU

  3. My wife took our 2011 Lincoln MKZ in to the local dealership and was told they can not just go by a visual inspection which showed it not working properly. The service mgr said they had to perform a diagnostic test for the 14M03 to cover the cost, if it was something different we would have to pay $115.00 for test plus cost of repair. Sounds a little suspicious to me, is this normal practice?

  5. I purchased my 2010 Milan back in August of 2015. The driver’s side tail light started going out a few months ago and after trying to replace the bulb, I found out that the only fix would be to replace the whole light. The part costs roughly $160 at my local dealership and does not include labor. Can I go back to a Ford dealership and request that they replace my light at no charge under this program?

  6. I recently purchased a 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Despite the cars age it only had 8500 miles on it. The the drivers side tail/brake light stopped working. Is it still covered under the customer satisfaction program 14M03?

  7. After I received my notice in the mail, i took it to the dealership who had replaced my tail lights at my cost. They said they couldn’t help me since i had lost my original receipt. Now i find out they could have used their records to have the amount reimbursed. To say that I am furious, is an understatement! Capital Ford Repair shop of Raleigh, NC SCREWED me. I am left with no choice but to advise everyone I know, through all types of online notifications, reviews, blog posts, FB, etc… the details. While this doesn’t affect Ford directly, it will hopefully make others think twice before selecting Capital Ford of Raleigh to do business with. This dealership does nothing to help it’s customers.

    • I feel your pain. Machens Quick Lane in Jefferson City, Mo. tried to charge me approx. $400 for my turn signal light, (that’s not covered) saying I needed the whole light fixture replaced. Luckily I got a second opinion and got the Bulb replaced for a few $$$. Just spreading the word.
