Summary

Some 2019 Transit vehicles built on 1-Oct-2018 and through 31-Jul-2019 with aluminum alloy single rear wheels (SRW) may exhibit broken rear wheel stud(s). This may be due to variation in the axle flange to wheel mating surface of the axle shafts. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace both rear axle shafts and all rear lug nuts.

Issue: Some 2019 Transit vehicles built on 1-Oct-2018 and through 31-Jul-2019 with aluminum alloy single rear wheels (SRW) may exhibit broken rear wheel stud(s). This may be due to variation in the axle flange to wheel mating surface of the axle shafts. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace both rear axle shafts and all rear lug nuts.

 

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

• 2019 Transit
• Built on 1-Oct-2018 and through 31-Jul-2019
• Equipped with aluminum alloy single rear wheels
• Broken rear wheel studs

Service Procedure

1. Inspect the rear wheel assemblies for any evidence of any customer abuse or tire/wheel contact damage that may contribute to broken wheel studs.
2. Is customer abuse or tire or wheel damage identified?

(1). Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 205-02B for normal diagnostics and repair procedures.

(2). No – replace both rear axle shaft assemblies and replace all rear wheel lug nuts. Refer to WSM, Section 205-02B. Retain the replaced axle shaft assemblies as they may be subject to the warranty parts return process.
