ISSUE:
Some 2017 Escape and MKC vehicles equipped with a 1.5L, 2.0L or 2.3L engine and built on or before 24-Jan-2017 may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0455, P0456, P144C and/or P1450 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory. Vehicles may also exhibit a rough idle and/or slow fuel fill concern. These concerns may be due to liquid fuel carryover into the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister and/or EVAP canister purge valve.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Connect the Ford
Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent scan tool to the data link connector (DLC). Check for DTCs. Is P0455, P0456, P144C and/or P1450 stored in the PCM memory?
- Yes – proceed to Step 2.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
- Inspect for liquid fuel at the EVAP canister or EVAP blocking valve.
- 1.5L/2.0L – disconnect the line on the EVAP blocking valve using the quick connect coupling. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-13.
- 2.3L – disconnect the lower line on the EVAP canister using the quick connect coupling. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
- Is liquid fuel present at the EVAP canister or EVAP blocking valve?
- Yes – proceed to Step 4.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
- Replace the EVAP canister and the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
- Before installing new components remove any remaining liquid fuel into a suitable container using a maximum of 172 kPa (25 psi) regulated low pressure shop air. Use a rubber tipped blowgun at the lower EVAP canister vapor line hose connection on the EVAP canister and in the engine compartment at the EVAP canister purge valve vapor line hose connection which leads to the EVAP canister. Refer to WSM, Section 303-13.
