  • NOISE – CLIMATE CONTROL – NOISE – RECIRC/FRESH AIR MODE DOOR FLUTTER OR HOOT NOISE – 104-120 KM/H (65 TO 75 MPH) WHEN RECIRCULATED AIR MODE IS SELECTED AND WINDOW OR MOONROOF IS OPENED SLIGHTLY

LINCOLN: 2003 TOWN CAR

Some vehicles built before 6/02/03 may exhibit an intermittent fluttering or hooting noise from the climate control system recirc/fresh air mode door.

The condition may be more pronounced at 104-120 km/h (65 to 75 MPH) with the climate control system set on recirculated air mode and a window or moonroof is opened slightly.

ACTION:

To service, remove the lip seal from the fresh air inlet side of the recirc/fresh air mode door and install an A/C evaporator damper door case gasket (self adhesive foam strips) 3W1Z-19B739-BA, if required. This will prevent the recirc/fresh air mode door from vibrating against the fresh air inlet opening in the climate control heater core housing due to outside and inside cabin air pressure differences.

NOTE: THE A/C EVAPORATOR DAMPER DOOR CASE GASKET 3W1Z-19B739-BA MAY ALREADY BE INSTALLED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES THAT HAVE NOT HAD SELF ADHESIVE FOAM STRIPS APPLIED

  1. Turn the ignition switch on and select floor mode on climate control system with the recirculated air mode turned off. Insure that the recirc/fresh air mode door drops down to the fresh air position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch off.
  3. Disconnect the battery.
  4. Remove the blower motor.
  5. Access the underside of the fresh air inlet opening inside of the heater core housing through the blower motor opening in the evaporator core housing.
  6. Wipe surface clean and securely apply three (3) self adhesive foam strips, Part Number 3W1Z-19B739-BA, to the inside of the heater core housing around the underside of the fresh air inlet opening. Make sure that the self adhesive foam strips are flush with the opening (Figure 1).

NOTE: FIGURE 1 IS A CUTAWAY VIEW OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE FRESH AIR INLET OPENING INSIDE OF THE HEATER CORE HOUSING.

NOTE: APPLY THE SELF ADHESIVE FOAM STRIPS TO THE HOUSING AND NOT THE MOVABLE RECIRC/FRESH AIR MODE DOOR. THE PURPOSE OF THE FOAM STRIPS IS TO DAMPEN THE RECIRC/FRESH AIR MODE DOOR WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED AGAINST THE HOUSING TO BLOCK OFF THE FRESH AIR INLET WHEN IN RECIRCULATED AIR MODE.

  1. Reach in through the blower motor opening and remove the entire lip of the rubber seal on the fresh air inlet side of the recirc/fresh air mode door only. Use a razor blade or equivalent tool to remove the lip (Figure 2).
  2. Reinstall the blower motor.
  3. Reconnect the battery.
  4. Verify proper climate control system mode function.
