ISSUE:
Some 2015-2016 Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.2L diesel engine with less than 10,500 Km (6,500 miles) and built on 5/11/2015 and through 2/8/2016 may exhibit a crank no start condition and/or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P2291 and/or P0087. This may be due to a fuel injection pump.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Check the vehicle mileage. Does the odometer have less than 10,500 Km (6,500 miles)?
- Yes – proceed to Step 2.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
- Using an Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent scan tool, check for DTCs. Does the vehicle exhibit a crank no start condition with or without DTCs P2291 and/or P0087?
- Yes – proceed to Step 3.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
- Using IDS enter PCM datalogger and select the following parameter identifications (PIDs):
- LP_FUEL_SW
- RPM
- FRP_A
- Does the LP_FUEL_SW PID read not low after a key cycle and remain in that state while cranking?
- Yes – reads not low proceed to Step 5.
- No – reads low this article does not apply. Refer to PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
- While cranking the engine, is the RPM PID greater than 150 RPM?
- Yes – reads over 150 RPM proceed to Step 6.
- No – reads 150 RPM or lower this article does not apply. Refer to PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
- While cranking the engine, is the FRP_A PID below 14,000 kPa (2,030 psi)?
- Yes – reads under 14,000 kPa (2,030 psi) clear the DTCs and perform the Diesel Fuel System Contamination Repair/Flushing procedure. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 310-00.
- No – reads 14,000 kPa (2,030 psi) or higher this article does not apply. Refer to PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
