Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2024 Maverick vehicles. The fuel tanks may have an open pinch joint between the two molds, which can allow fuel to leak.
Remedy
Owners are advised to park and shut off the engine immediately if a fuel leak is detected or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp illuminates. Dealers will replace the fuel tanks, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 24S17.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
In all of the affected vehicles, the fuel tank may have been manufactured with an open fuel tank pinch joint which can lead to a liquid or fuel vapor leak. Customers may notice fuel leaking onto the ground or smell fuel if a leak is present. Additionally, the evaporative emissions monitor may illuminate the malfunction indicator light in the cluster. A leaking fuel tank increases the risk of fire.
SERVICE ACTION
DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this safety recall. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers the 4th quarter of 2024 when it is anticipated that parts ordering information and repair instructions will be available to support this safety recall. For new vehicle storage guidelines, refer to EFC13033, Storage Guidelines for New Vehicles.
IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening an RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of record will be notified via first-class mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.
PLEASE NOTE:
Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $27,168 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery.

Chronology :
On February 6, 2024, an issue pertaining to a fuel tank open pinch was brought to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) for review after Ford’s Hermosillo Assembly Plant (HSAP) identified a leak coming from the fuel tank on a 2024 Maverick vehicle.
An In-Transit Stop Ship was issued to contain vehicles with suspect fuel tanks that had been produced at HSAP.
There are no warranty or field reports associated with fuel tank leaks on 2024 Mavericks.
On March 1, 2024, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
Ford is not aware of any reports of fire, accident or injury related to this condition.

Descriptive Information : Ford’s team reviewed plant records to determine the population of affected parts. The Ford process is capable of tracing fuel tank production to the vehicle in which the fuel tank is installed. Affected vehicles are equipped with fuel tanks that may have an open pinch joint.

Description of the Safety Risk : An open fuel tank pinch joint can result in a potential liquid fuel or fuel vapor leak from the fuel tank. A leaking fuel tank increases the risk of fire.
Description of the Cause : The supplier’s mold shuttle experienced a stoppage after a sudden power outage. When power was restored, there was a misalignment between mold and extruded sheets. This misalignment caused a shift of wall thickness on the fuel tank (open pinch). Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : Customers may notice fuel leaking onto the ground, or smell fuel. Additionally, the evaporative emissions monitor may illuminate the malfunction indicator
cluster. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a
Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the fuel tanks replaced. There will be no charge for this service. In Owner Letters mailed to customers, Ford will advise customers to safely park and shut off the engine as promptly as possible in the event of a MIL lamp or if fuel leakage symptoms are observed.
Ford provided the general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners prior to notification of a safety recall in May 2023. Ford will forward a copy of the notification letters to dealers to the agency when available.
