Affected vehicles are equipped with a Smart Data Link Connector (SDLC) that may have been exposed to moisture following a manufacturing plant rework procedure. These vehicles are not produced in VIN order. Production Dates : JUL 14, 2022 – MAR 29, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Noncompliance : Description of the Noncompliance : Affected vehicles have Smart Data Link Connector modules that may have been exposed to moisture, potentially leading to corrosion in the module, connector and wire harness. The resulting corrosion may interfere with the vehicle’s Controller Area Network (CAN) communication. As a result, the Instrument Panel Cluster may be inoperative when installed by the vehicle upfitter or other vehicle modifier. FMVSS 1 : 101 – Control and displays FMVSS 2 : 105 – Hydraulic and electric brake systems Description of the Safety Risk : An inoperative Instrument Panel Cluster does not provide safety-related information to the driver and increases the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : During a rework procedure on the stripped chassis units, a protective bag was removed from the Smart Data Link Connector module to access the On Board Diagnostic port. After completion of the rework procedure, the bag was not properly reinstalled thereby leaving the module exposed to the elements. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : None. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their SDLC module replaced and to splice in a new wire harness connector. An inspection of the wire harness will also be performed and if corrosion is found past the point of the connector splice, the entire wire harness will be replaced. There will be no charge for this service. Ford provided the general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners prior to notification of a safety recall in May 2023. The ending date for reimbursement eligibility is estimated to be September 30, 2024. Ford will forward a copy of the notification letters to dealers to the agency when available. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The new SDLC, wire harness and connector will be free of corrosion. Ford Motor Company is working closely with its suppliers to produce parts for this repair. When parts become available, Ford Motor Company will notify you via mail to schedule a service appointment with your dealer for repairs to be completed free of charge (parts and labor). Parts are anticipated to be available 4th quarter 2023. What should you do? When parts are available, Ford Motor Company will send a letter to inform you that parts are available and to contact your dealer to schedule a repair.
