Safety Recall 23S30
Certain 2022-2023 Model Year F-150 Battery Electric Vehicles
Rear Lightbar Replacement
AFFECTED VEHICLES
| Vehicle | Model Year | Assembly Plant | Build Dates |
| F-150 BEV | 2022-2023 | Rouge Electric Vehicle Center | October 14, 2021 through March 28, 2023 |
US population of affected vehicles: 16,364. Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS and FSA VIN Lists.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
In all of the affected vehicles, there may be microscopic cracks in the rear lightbar’s reversing lamp lens. If a microscopic crack has been initiated, it can propagate further via various methods such as temperature cycling, vehicle vibration, and/or tail gate slam. If a microscopic crack is present, condensation can potentially enter into the reversing lamp lens through these cracks and cause electrical failure to the reverse lamps. Inoperative reverse lamps may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse gear, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
SERVICE ACTION
DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this safety recall. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers 4th quarter, 2023 when it is anticipated that parts ordering information and repair instructions will be available to support this safety recall.
IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening an RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of record will be notified via first-class mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.
PLEASE NOTE:
Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $26,315 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery.
DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES
The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act law effective June 2016 prohibits a rental company from selling, renting or leasing vehicles subject to a safety or compliance recall. Please consult your legal counsel for legal advice.
23S30 – CERTAIN 2022-2023 FORD
F-150 BEV – REVERSE LAMP INOPERATIVE OR FLICKERING
Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision.
March – May 2023
On March 23, 2023, Ford
’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) initiated an investigation into reports of moisture in the rear lightbar of 2022 and 2023 model year F-150 BEV Platinum and Lariat vehicles. These vehicles have a rear lightbar that stretches across the tailgate and houses the supplemental tail lamp function and the reverse lamp function. Ford
identified elevated warranty report rates of moisture in the rear lightbar and reported that certain claims indicated inoperative or flickering rear supplemental tail lamps and reverse lamps.
During Ford
’s CCRG investigation, field return parts were obtained for evaluation through May 2023. Part return analysis showed the visual appearance of water in the lamp as droplets or condensation from the microcracks in the lightbar outer lens. The parts returned from the field were tested for functionality and more than half had inoperative or flickering supplemental tail lamps and/or reverse lamps, consistent with customer and dealer technician verbatims.
The CCRG investigation determined that the stress to the lightbar is due to static and dynamic loading of the system during the assembly plant fit process of aligning the tailgate and surrounding components or during severe tailgate surface loading at temperatures below -40 Celsius. Forces on the lightbar and housing transfer stress to the lens, which could result in microcracks.
On May 24, 2023, CCRG reviewed statistical projections which predicted an elevated lightbar failure probability through the expected life of the vehicles. The projections are based on warranty reports of water ingress, including reports of inoperative or flickering reverse lamps and supplemental tail lamps.
As of May 2, 2023, there are 291 warranty claims and four Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports received from Aug 24, 2022, through April 28, 2023, indicating either moisture in the rear lightbar and/or inoperative or flickering reverse lamps.
As of May 9, 2023, Ford
is not aware of any accidents, fires or injuries related to this condition.
On June 2, 2023, Ford
’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.
