HYBRID/ENERGI – WRENCH/ENGINE LAMP ILLUMINATES – DTC U0284 – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 5/31/2013

This article supersedes TSB 13-11-1 to update the Parts List.

 

ISSUE:

Some 2013 Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi vehicles built on or before 5/31/2013 may illuminate the wrench or engine lamp with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) U0284.

 

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure Steps to correct the condition.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the Active Grille Shutter connector C1651. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Cell 33-1. Is moisture or corrosion present in the connector?
   1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnosis.
   2. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
2. Replace the Active Grille Shutter Actuator connector C1651 with a pigtail kit following the instructions included in the kit.
3. Is corrosion present on the active grille shutter actuator terminals?
   1. No – dry with compressed air and proceed to Step 4.
   2. Yes – replace the active grille shutter actuator. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-02. Proceed to Step 4.
4. Remove the left hand fender splash shield. Refer to WSM, Section 501-02.
5. To improve accessibility, disconnect in-line connector C146. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Cell 151-1.
6. Remove the horn.
7. Disconnect in-line connector C134, refer to Wiring Diagram, Cell 151-1.
8. Replace in-line connector C134 with pigtail kits (male and female) following the instructions included in the kits.
   1. The identification colors for some circuits may be different on each side of the connector. Use masking tape and label each wire to match its mating wire on the opposite side of the connector prior to cutting and splicing.
   2. Depending upon vehicle option content, some circuits may not have a mating wire on the opposite side of the connector.
   3. Any unused wires in the service pigtail should be folded over and sealed with heat shrink tubing to prevent water entry through the cut ends.
9. Remove the existing white plastic retainer from in-line connector C134 and transfer it to the service pigtail connector.
10. Push the connector retainer into the original location in the sheet metal.
11. Install the horn.
12. Connect in-line connector C146, refer to WSM, Section 501-02.
13. Install the left hand fender splash shield. Refer to WSM, Section 501–02.
