| AWD – LEAK FROM PTU – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 12/11/2013 |

2013-2014 Explorer, Taurus and MKS vehicles equipped with all wheel drive (AWD) and built on or before 12/11/2013 may exhibit power transfer unit (PTU) fluid leaking.
This concern may be due to a PTU vent hose which is missing or disconnected.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
- Is the PTU equipped with a jiggle cap style vent assembly?
- Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to WSM for normal diagnostics.
- No – proceed to step 3.
- Is the PTU vent hose missing or disconnected?
- Yes – install a new hose.
- Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) engine. (Figure 1)

- No – this article does not apply. Refer to WSM for normal diagnostics.
- Yes – install a new hose.
- Clean fluid residue from the vehicle by applying Motorcraft Metal Brake Parts Cleaner or equivalent on a rag and wiping the area clean.
- Use caution not to introduce brake cleaner into the PTU fluid.
- Fill the PTU to specifications. Refer to WSM for correct procedure.

Wow what a eye opener owner of a 2013 fully loaded edge with extended warranty to find out that only covers you to 60,000.Guess that one is on me but a ptu failure at 62,000 Wow hit me hard my dad retired from ford while they were still building a quality vehicle got estimate from suburban ford for 2300.00 some one would like me to pay for their Christmas.Going to take my slap in the face and never buy substandard vehicles at least my father lays in rest knowing he produced quality products when he was employed by the Ford Motor Company
My 2012 Lincoln MKZ PTU just died at 64kmiles. This is ridiculous. I knew I should have stayed with a foreign car. How does this company remain so successful in the US??? Embarrassing.
This is really a disaster to ford users, how could a PTU leak, and why its price so expensive and how come it is not with warranty, i hate ford
I just found mine has that defect too ; that socks ; it’s amazing that Ford don’t cover that it’s not fear because it’s a $50000 vehicle.???
My 2014 Explorer needed a PTU replacement – because I was told it was “worn out” at 68000 miles – unfortunately the dealership that serviced it noticed this when my vehicle was NOT under warranty – but 8K later. Since I now know this is a known issue in the “Ford” world – I would have thought the dealership/service people would have flagged the PTU earlier so that I would not have to pay $1600 to get the PTU replaced. This was the Saratoga Springs, NY dealership – New Country Ford. This problem only came to light – not from the staff who work there who inspected my Explorer – but from a surprise email I received saying there was a “significant issue” with my PTU – when I called the service people I was told that it was probably “keyed” in wrong and not to worry – so glad I didn’t listen to them and made an appointment to get the PTU checked. Recommend anyone with a Ford to ask while under warranty – it’s a shame this wasn’t caught earlier. I will not be getting another FORD and will not bring my car back to that service center.
