Frequently Asked Questions

In some of our Escape® SUVs, Maverick® pickups and LincolneBay logo Corsair® SUVs, there’s the risk of an underhood fire, melting engine components or smoke, increasing the risk of an injury. In the event of an engine failure, engine oil and/or fuel vapor may leak and accumulate under the hood of your vehicle.

WHAT CAUSED THIS ISSUE?

Unfortunately, we’ve had some isolated engine manufacturing issues that cause engine block or oil pan breaches that result in 2.5L HEV/PHEV engine failures. The fluid dynamics created by the Under Engine Shield and Active Grille Shutter System could increase the likelihood of engine oil and/or fuel vapor accumulating near other sources of ignition, such as the exhaust system.

Vehicle Model Year Assembly Plant Build Dates
Corsair2021-2022LouisvilleOctober 24, 2019 through June 13, 2022
Escape2020-2022January 09, 2019 through June 13, 2022
Maverick2022HermosilloFebruary 03, 2021 through July 07, 2022

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

Isolated engine manufacturing issues have resulted in 2.5L HEV/PHEV engine failures involving engine block or oil pan breach. The fluid dynamics induced by the under engine shield and Active Grille Shutter (AGS) system could increase the likelihood of engine oil and/or fuel vapor expelled during an engine block or oil pan breach accumulating near sources of ignition, primarily expected to be the exhaust system. Engine oil and/or fuel vapor that accumulates near an ignition source, may ignite resulting in an under hood fire, and increasing the risk of injury.

SERVICE ACTION

Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to modify the front under engine shield by creating additional drain holes and modify the AGS system by removing 4 blinds. This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.

OWNER NOTIFICATION AND MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of August 8, 2022. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

SOLD VEHICLES

  • FordeBay logo has not issued instructions to stop selling/delivering or driving used vehicles under this safety recall. Owners should contact their dealer for an appointment to have their vehicles remedied as soon as practicable. Owners can continue to safely drive their vehicles.
  • Immediately contact any of your affected customers whose vehicles are not on your VIN list but are identified in OASIS. Give the customer a copy of the Owner Notification Letter (when available) and schedule a service date.
  • Correct other affected vehicles identified in OASIS which are brought to your dealership.
  • Dealers are to prioritize repairs of customer vehicles over repairs of new and used vehicle inventory.

STOCK VEHICLES

  • Correct all affected units in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.
  • Use OASIS to identify any affected vehicles in your used vehicle inventory.

DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES

The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act law effective June 2016 prohibits a rental company from selling, renting or leasing vehicles subject to a safety or compliance recall. Please consult your legal counsel for legal advice.

TITLE BRANDED / SALVAGED VEHICLES

Affected title branded and salvaged vehicles are eligible for this recall.

OWNER REFUNDS

  • This safety recall must still be performed, even if the owner has paid for a previous repair. Claiming a refund will not close the recall on the vehicle.
  • FordeBay logo Motor Company is offering a refund for owner-paid repairs covered by this recall if the repair was performed prior to the date indicated in the reimbursement plan, which is posted with this bulletin. Owners are directed to seek reimbursement through authorized dealers or, at their option, directly through FordeBay logo Motor Company at P.O. Box 6251, Dearborn, MI 481216251.
  • Dealers are also pre-approved to refund owner-paid emergency repairs that were performed away from an authorized servicing dealer after the end date specified in the reimbursement plan. Non-covered repairs, or those judged by FordeBay logo to be excessive, will not be reimbursed.
  • Refunds will only be provided for the cost associated with the modification of the front under engine shield and AGS system.

RENTAL VEHICLES

Dealers are pre-approved for up to one day for a comparable rental vehicle (no SSSC contact required). Follow Extended Service Plan (ESP) guidelines for dollar amounts. Rentals will only be reimbursed for the day the vehicle is at the dealership for the repair. Prior approval for more than one rental day is required from the SSSC. Contact the SSSC via the SSSC Web Contact Site for consideration and approval if appropriate.

PICK-UP AND DELIVERY

All customers affected by this recall have the option of complimentary Vehicle Pick-Up & Delivery service (at participating dealers). Pick-Up and Delivery may also be combined with a rental vehicle for one day. Claim any additional rental days approved by the SSSC as instructed. Dealers are authorized to claim unique services for completing this program, including:

  • Dealers are authorized to claim one-half labor hour per repair for vehicle pick-up and delivery services.
  • Dealers must retain a Vehicle Pick-Up and Delivery Record with the repair order documentation. Refer to the Claims Preparation and Submission section and Attachment IV for details.

Chronology :

On May 4, 2022, an issue pertaining to 2.5L HEV and PHEV under hood fires was brought to FordeBay logo’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) for review.

From May 4-June 8, 2022, FordeBay logo’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) data analysis revealed 19 field reports of under hood fire or smoke for 2.5L HEV/PHEV vehicles. These reports were reviewed at a June 8, 2022 meeting. On June 8, 2022, FordeBay logo’s CCRG initiated a stop ship and in-transit stop ship for all affected vehicles.

Through the remainder of June 2022, FordeBay logo continued to research the concern to better understand the reports, trends amongst the reports, scope the population, and understand potential causal factors.

As of June 22, 2022, FordeBay logo’s CCRG has identified 23 warranty and field reports globally of under hood fire or smoke on 2.5L HEV/PHEV engines after a suspected block or oil pan breach.

The date range of identified reports is April 5, 2021 through May 19, 2022. Of the 23 reports, FordeBay logo’s CCRG has categorized the warranty and field reports as: nine describing under hood or vehicle fire, six reporting localized under hood melting, seven describing under hood smoke, and one that did not contain sufficient detail to characterize. The current global 2020-2022MY 2.5L HEV/PHEV rates amongst affected models for block or oil pan breach are 0.17 R/1000, of which 0.08 R/1000 include reports of under hood fire and/or smoke.

Based on elevated occurrences of 2.5L HEV/PHEV under hood fires, the FordeBay logo’s CCRG and Technical Review Group recommended a safety recall for the affected vehicles.

On June 29, 2022, FordeBay logo’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.

FordeBay logo is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

July 15, 2022: FordeBay logo amended the volume of affected vehicles from 100,689 to 101,076 based on clarification of vehicle history information from Hermosillo Assembly Plant.
