Issue: Some 2017-2019 Ford GT vehicles may exhibit the active aero wing contacting the body after the vehicle has been stored for an extended period of time with the active aero wing in the lowered position.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all the following criteria:

• 2017-2019 Ford GT
• Active aero wing contacting the body after the vehicle has been stored for an extended period of time with the active aero wing in the lowered position

Service Procedure

NOTE: Before starting this procedure, review the procedure and all photos with the customer to clarify that small irreversible modifications will be made to the rear body panels by installing the wing bumpers. It is advised to get customer approval before proceeding.

1. Remove the active aero wing assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-08.

NOTE: Vehicles with custom protective body wrapping installed in the areas being serviced will only need to have a portion of the custom protective body wrapping removed from the location indicated in Step 3.

NOTE: Do not place protective tape over an existing custom protective body wrapping as this will lead to wing/body clearance issues.

2. Open the engine cover. This will improve visibility to the work area and minimize the potential for damage.

3. Inspect the locations indicated in Figure 1 for the presence of protective tape or custom protective body wrapping already being installed. Is there protective tape or custom protective body wrapping installed at locations indicated in Figure 1 Callout 1 and/or 2?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 4.

(2). No – clean the surfaces of the body panels in locations indicated in Figure 1 Callout 1 and/or 2 using only alcohol wipes (or equivalent). Install protective tape in locations indicated by Figure 1 Callout 1 and/or 2. Proceed to Step 4.

NOTE: If necessary, a “wetting solution” mixture can be used to assist in the application of the protective tape. The “wetting solution” may consist of liquid dish soap and water (approximately 1 drop of dish soap to 8 oz of water). It is recommended that after the mixture is prepared, it is poured into a spray bottle for use during installation.

4. Is there protective tape or custom protective body wrapping installed at location indicated in Figure 1 Callout 3?

(1). Yes – carefully remove the protective tape or custom protective body wrapping from the body panel located at Figure 1 Callout 3. Using only alcohol wipes or equivalent, clean the surface of the body panel of any adhesive residue at Figure 1 Callout 3. Proceed to Step 5.

(2). No – proceed to Step 5.

5. Place a low-tack protective tape and clean covers on and around all work areas to prevent paint and body panel damage.

6. Print the drilling template by clicking this link. Verify the horizontal and vertical scale of the image using a ruler against the scale on the drilling template printout (Figure 2) to confirm the image scale is correct. Is the scaling of the drilling template printout the same scale as the ruler?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 7.

(2). No – adjust scale of the printing properties to Actual size to resize the image. Repeat Step 6.

7. Cut out the drilling templates and place them on the body as indicated in Figure 1 Callout 3. Secure the drilling templates using a low-tack protective tape.

8. Using a sharp 1/16 inch drill bit with a depth stopper that leaves only 1 inch of the drill bit tip exposed, drill a 1/16 inch pilot hole in the locations indicated on each drilling template.

9. Using a sharp 1/4 inch drill bit with a depth stopper that leaves only 1 inch of the drill bit tip exposed, drill a 1/4 inch hole in the locations indicated on each drilling template.

NOTE: A 1/4 inch drill bit must be used. A metric equivalent is not acceptable.

10. Carefully inspect the 1/4 inch holes for any burrs or protruding material. Running the drill bit in reverse helps remove protruding material and clean the hole.

11. Remove the template and any low-tack protective tape surrounding the 1/4 inch hole.

12. Install the left and right wing bumper pads onto the underside of the active aero wing.

(1). Using only alcohol wipes or equivalent, clean the surface of the wing in the areas indicated in Figure 3.

(2). Place the double-sided wing bumper pad tape on the left and right wing bumper pads. (Figure 4)

(3). Place the left and right wing bumper pads onto the underside of the active aero wing in the locations indicated in Figures 5-6. Apply light pressure by hand to remove any air from underneath the wing bumper pads adhesive surfaces.

13. Install a wing bumper into the 1/4 inch holes on each side. (Figure 7)

NOTE: There are 3 wing bumper thicknesses provided. It is best to start with the 5/32 inch (middle size) thickness first.

14. Reinstall the active aero wing assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 501-08.

15. Using the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS), command the active aero wing assembly down and into the fully lowered position.

16. Is there less than a 0.5mm (0.02 in.) gap between the wing bumper pad and the wing bumper?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 17.

(2). No – using the IDS, deploy/raise the active aero wing. Proceed to Step 13 using the next thickest or thinnest bumper as needed.

17. Close the engine cover. Repair is complete.
