Side Curtain Air Bags May Not Properly Inflate

In the event of a crash, if the diffuser detaches from the inflator during air bag deployment, the curtain air bag may not inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary

FordeBay logo Motor Company (FordeBay logo) is recalling certain 2020 Escape and Transit vehicles. The affected vehicles may have an improperly crimped diffuser in the side curtain air bags which may result in the diffuser detaching from the inflator in the event of an air bag deployment.

 

Remedy

FordeBay logo will notify owners, and dealers will replace the side curtain air bag modules, free of charge. An interim letter notifying owners of the safety risk was mailed August 3, 2020. The recall began January 11, 2021. Owners may contact FordeBay logo’s customer service at 1-866-436-7332. FordeBay logo’s number for this recall is 20S35.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

In the affected vehicles, a defect may exist in the curtain airbag assembly. Due to an improper crimp, the air bag diffuser may detach from the inflator during air bag deployment resulting in the air bag not inflating properly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

 

SERVICE ACTION

DO NOT DEMONSTRATE OR DELIVER any new in-stock vehicles involved in this safety recall. A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers late Fourth Quarter (Q4) 2020 when it is anticipated that parts ordering information and repair instructions will be available to support this safety recall.

IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening a RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owner Notifications, advising that parts are currently not available were mailed in September, 2020.

Owners of record will be notified again, via first-class mail after repair instructions and parts ordering information have been provided to dealers.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery.

On your vehicle, it may be possible the side curtain air bag was assembled with an improper crimp, which could result in the air bag not inflating properly during air bag deployment.

What will FordeBay logo and     FordeBay logo Motor Company is working closely with its suppliers to produce parts for your dealer do?      this repair. When parts become available, FordeBay logo Motor Company will notify you via mail to schedule a service appointment with your dealer for repairs to be completed free of charge (parts and labor). Parts are anticipated to be available September 2020.

 

What should you do?

When parts are available, FordeBay logo Motor Company will send a letter to inform you that parts are available and to contact your dealer to schedule a repair.

FordeBay logo has not issued instructions to stop driving your vehicle under this safety recall. When parts are available, you should contact your dealer for an appointment to have your vehicle remedied as soon as practicable. You can continue to safely drive your vehicle.

Part Available Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of January 11, 2021. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

FSA VIN Lists have been available through https://web.fsavinlists.dealerconnection.com since July 21, 2020. Owner names and addresses have been available since August 21, 2020.

NOTE: Your FSA VIN Lists may contain owner names and addresses obtained from motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than in connection with this recall is a violation of law in several states, provinces, and countries. Accordingly, you must limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

 

SOLD VEHICLES

  • FordeBay logo has not issued instructions to stop selling/delivering or driving used vehicles under this safety recall. Owners should contact their dealer for an appointment to have their vehicles remedied as soon as practicable. Owners can continue to safely drive their vehicles.
  • Immediately contact any of your affected customers whose vehicles are not on your VIN list but are identified in OASIS. Give the customer a copy of the Owner Notification Letter (when available) and schedule a service date.
  • Correct other affected vehicles identified in OASIS which are brought to your dealership.
  • Dealers are to prioritize repairs of customer vehicles over repairs of new and used vehicle inventory.

 

STOCK VEHICLES

  • Correct all affected units in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES

  • For vehicles within new vehicle bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage, no SSSC approval is required, although related damage must be on a separate repair line with the “Related Damage” radio button checked.

  • For vehicles outside new vehicle bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage, submit an Approval Request to the SSSC Web Contact Site prior to completing the repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

 

Escape Vehicles

 

1. Replace the right hand (RH) side curtain air bag. Please follow the Workshop Manual (WSM) procedures in Section 501-20B.

 

Transit Vehicles

 

1. Match the VIN of the vehicle to the VIN list found in Attachment IV to determine if the left hand (LH) or right hand (RH) side curtain airbag is to be replaced.

 

2. Replace the RH or LH side curtain airbag based off the VIN list for that vehicle. Please follow the WSM procedures in Section 501-20B.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: Federal law prohibits selling motor vehicle parts or components that are under safety, compliance, or emissions recall. Unless a part is requested to be returned to FordeBay logo, all parts replaced under this FSA must be scrapped in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal environmental protection and hazardous material regulations. FORDeBay logo MOTOR COMPANY ISSUES THREE SAFETY RECALLS IN NORTH AMERICA

Jul 21, 2020 | DEARBORN, Mich.

DEARBORN, Mich., July 21, 2020 – FordeBay logo Motor Company is issuing three safety recalls in North America.

Safety recall for select 2016-20 LincolneBay logo MKX and Nautilus vehicles with 16-way power seats In affected vehicles, there may be insufficient clearance between the driver and/or front passenger seat wiring harness and the seat cushion pan, which could cause wiring harness abrasion. If certain wires in the seat wiring harness are damaged through contact with the seat cushion frame, the airbag system may not perform as intended in some circumstances, increasing the risk of injuries.

FordeBay logo is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition. This action affects 19,299 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories, 4,262 in Canada and 1,023 in Mexico.

Affected vehicles were built at Oakville Assembly Plant from Nov. 11, 2014, to Jan. 24, 2020.

Dealers will install flocking tape on the exposed edge of the 16-way seat cushion frames, inspect the wire harness, and repair or replace as needed. The FordeBay logo reference number for this recall is 20S37.

Safety recall for select 2021 FordeBay logo F-650 and F750 vehicles with 7.3-liter engine

Affected vehicles were built without certain thermal protection components intended to reduce the interior cabin floor and seat attachment temperatures. These missing components may include an underbody heat shield, a thermal insulator patch under the floor mat, or covers for the seat bolts and seat pedestal. In vehicles built without these thermal protection components, the interior cabin floor and seat attachments could reach elevated temperatures during certain highload, high ambient temperature driving conditions. Continuous skin contact with elevated temperatures may lead to skin irritation or a minor burn.

FordeBay logo is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition. This action affects 1,299 vehicles in the U.S. and 31 in Canada.

Affected vehicles were built at Ohio Assembly Plant from March 18, to June 8, 2020.

Dealers will install the underbody heat shield, thermal insulator patch under the floor mat, seat base covers and seat bolt covers. The FordeBay logo reference number for this recall is 20S36.

Safety recall for select 2020 FordeBay logo Escape and Transit vehicles

In affected vehicles, the curtain airbag may not inflate properly during deployment, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

FordeBay logo is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition. This action affects 68 vehicles in the U.S. and 12 in Canada.

Affected vehicles are as follows:

  • 2020 FordeBay logo Escape vehicles built at Louisville Assembly Plant on March 18, 2020
  • 2020 FordeBay logo Transit vehicles built at Kansas City Assembly Plant from Feb. 18 to March 19, 2020.

Dealers will replace the curtain airbag modules. The FordeBay logo reference number for this recall is 20S35.
