Summary
Watts Manufacturing, LLC (Watts Manufacturing) is recalling certain 2019 First responder vehicles built on Ford
F-550 chassis and equipped with Whelen brake lights. Depending on the specific wiring of the vehicle, these brake lights may illuminate when the brake pedal has not been pressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Watts Manufacturing will notify owners and Whelen dealers will replace the brake lights, free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2019. Owners may contact Watts Manufacturing customer service at 1-785-404-6003.

On March 19th, 2019 we were notified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the brake lights (M6BTT) used on the Union City Rescue have been recalled. The description of the defect is as follows – “For the recall population, the break light may activate if there is a transient voltage on the brake input line (e.g., without further break input), but can be returned to normal operation when a brake input is applied and then removed. Whelen determined that the root cause of this condition was tied to transient voltage on the input line creating a false and steady activation of the brake light. The condition is dependent on the specific wiring of the vehicle and other installed equipment. The product functions normally if it is not exposed to these specific conditions, but the condition has the potential to occur in the entire recall population”
As of this date there has been no warranty claims, or any crashes, fatalities, damage to vehicles, or any other field events related to this issue. Watts Manufacturing, LLC will be providing you with free replacements for you to install on the Fire Rescue Vehicle.
