Summary
Some 2015-2017 Edge vehicles built on or before 10-Aug-2017 and 2016-2018 MKX vehicles built on or before 15-Dec-2017, equipped with a power liftgate and the hands-free liftgate activation feature may exhibit the liftgate opening or closing when a rear door is slammed shut, or the rear fascia is contacted such as kneeling or resting a foot on the fascia while the key is present. Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

Service Procedure
MKX Without Trailer Tow
- Is the vehicle built on or before 10-Aug-2017?
(1). Yes – proceed to Step 2.
(2). No – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-03.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to WSM, Section 100-02.
- Separate the hands-free liftgate actuation sensor lead wires and carefully secure with tie strap. The tie straps should be loose enough to prevent excessive pulling and damage or chafing to the lead wires. (Figures 1 – 2)

MKX With Factory Trailer Tow
- Is the vehicle an MKX with Factory Towing built on or before 15-Dec-2017 but after 10-Aug-2017?
(1). Yes – proceed to Step 2.
(2). No – raise the vehicle, separate the hands-free liftgate actuation sensor lead wires and carefully secure with tie strap. The tie straps should be loose enough to prevent excessive pulling and damage or chafing to the lead wires. Proceed to Step 3. (Figures 1 – 2)
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to WSM, Section 100-02.
- Remove the rear bumper cover. Refer to WSM, Section 501-19.
- Gently raise the middle of the hands-free liftgate actuation upper sensor wire and insert it into the middle clip ensuring the wire remains in the two clips on either side of the middle clip. (Figures 3 – 4)

- Replace the hands-free actuation module. Refer to WSM, Section 501-03.
- Reinstall the rear bumper cover. Refer to WSM, Section 501-19.
Edge/Edge Sport
- Remove the rear bumper cover. Refer to WSM, Section 501-19.
- Separate the hands-free liftgate actuation sensor lead wires and carefully secure with tie straps. The tie straps should be loose enough to prevent excessive pulling and damage or chafing to the lead wires.
(1). Using a 6 mm (0.236 in.) drill bit, drill a hole in the rear fascia to accommodate tie straps as shown.
