Reductant Heater and Sender Assembly Repair
PROGRAM TERMS
This program extends the warranty coverage of the reductant heater and sender assembly to 11 years of service or 120,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, whichever occurs first. If a vehicle has already exceeded either the time or mileage limits, this extended warranty coverage will last through December 31, 2018. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners.
NOTE: This program does not apply to vehicles that qualify for repairs under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Repairs for vehicles covered by New Vehicle Limited Warranty should be claimed using existing published labor operation codes.
VEHICLES COVERED BY THIS PROGRAM
Vehicle | Model Year | Assembly Plant | Build Dates |
F-250 – F-550 | 2011-2012 | Kentucky Truck | August 24, 2009 through October 23, 2012 |
F-450 – F-550 | 2013-2015 | Kentucky Truck | April 16, 2012 through December 9, 2014 |
Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS.
REASON FOR PROVIDING EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE
In some of the affected vehicles, the reductant heater and sender assembly may fail causing the malfunction indictor lamp (MIL) to illuminate and, in some instances, may cause the engine to go into a reduced power de-rate strategy. If this condition exists, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the reductant heater and sender assembly will be present in the powertrain control module.
SERVICE ACTION
If an affected vehicle exhibits this condition, dealers are to service the reductant heater and sender system following the instructions in the technical information section of this bulletin. This service must be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.
OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE
Owner Letters are expected to be mailed the week of June 25, 2018. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that have the MIL illuminated with DTC’s related to the reductant heater and sender assembly whether or not the customer has received a letter.

- Using an Integrated Diagnostic Scan Tool (IDS) perform a key on engine off self test on the PCM. Are any DTC’s present related to the reductant heater and sender assembly?
- Yes – Proceed to Step 2.
- No – This program does not apply.
- Determine the appropriate repair based on what DTC’s are present.
- If DTC P2043 is the only DTC present related to the reductant heater and sender assembly, proceed to the PCM Reprogramming procedure on Page 2.
- If DTC’s P205C, P205D, or any other DTC’s related to the reductant heater and sender assembly are present, replace the reductant heater and sender assembly. Please follow the Workshop Manual (WSM) procedures in Section 303-08 then proceed to the PCM Reprogramming procedure on Page 2.
PCM Reprogramming
NOTE: Reprogram appropriate vehicle modules before performing diagnostics and clear all DTCs after programming. For DTCs generated after reprogramming, follow normal diagnostic service procedures.
- Connect a battery charger to the 12V battery.
- Reprogram the PCM using Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) release 109.01 or higher.
NOTE: Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.
NOTE: Follow the IDS on-screen instructions to complete the reprogramming procedure.
- Disconnect the battery charger from the 12V battery once the reprogramming has completed.
Important Information for Module Programming
NOTE: When programming or reprogramming a module, use the following basic checks to ensure programming completes without errors.
- Make sure the 12V battery is fully charged before carrying out the programming steps and connect IDS/scan tool to a power source.
- Inspect Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) and cables for any damage. Make sure scan tool connections are not interrupted during programming.
- A hardwired connection is strongly recommended.
- Turn off all unnecessary accessories (radio, heated/cooled seats, headlamps, interior lamps, HVAC system, etc.) and close doors.
- Disconnect/depower any aftermarket accessories (remote start, alarm, power inverter, CB radio, etc.).
- Follow all scan tool on-screen instructions carefully.
- Disable IDS/scan tool sleep mode, screensaver, hibernation modes.
- Create all sessions key on engine off (KOEO). Starting the vehicle before creating a session will cause errors within the programming inhale process.
Recovering a module when programming has resulted in a blank module:
NEVER DELETE THE ORIGINAL SESSION!
a. Obtain the original IDS that was used when the programming error occurred during module reprogramming (MR) or programmable module installation (PMI).
b. Disconnect the VCM from the data link connector (DLC) and the IDS.
c. Reconnect the VCM to IDS and then connect to the DLC. Once reconnected, the VCM icon should appear in the corner of the IDS screen. If it does not, troubleshoot the IDS to VCM connection.
d. Locate the original vehicle session when programming failed. This should be the last session used
in most cases. If not, use the session created on the date that the programming failed.
NOTE: If the original session is not listed in the previous session list, click the Recycle Bin icon at the lower right of the previous session screen. This loads any deleted sessions and allows you to look through them. Double-click the session to restore it.
e. Once the session is loaded, the failed process should resume automatically.
f. If programming does not resume automatically, proceed to the Module Programming menu and select the previously attempted process, PMI or MR.
g. Follow all on-screen prompts/instructions.
h. The last screen on the IDS may list additional steps required to complete the programming process.
Make sure all applicable steps listed on the screen are followed in order.

2014 Ford F250, 68K. Engine Indicator Light came on. Ford States Def Heater issue. $1200 to replace. My Extended Plan just expired.
My 2014 Ford F250 has 68000. The Indicator lamp came on. Ford says the Def Heater was the issues. Stated my truck was not covered under the recall. Warranty has run out (Naturally). Said cost to repair almost 1200 Dollars.
2015 f250 def heater went out with 36000 on truck coded bad heater 1000 to fix any options for recall?
Most likely not, Recalls are usually safety related.
My 2014 F250 just through the code P20BA in was manufactured out of the Kentucky plant October 30, 2013 (within the dates of the F450 – F550 coverage). Dealer was helpful and sympathetic gave me the number to call Ford – will be calling tomorrow.
MY 2015 F250 ALSO THRU THE P20BA CODE FOR THE REDUCTANT DEF HEATER. I ONLY HAVE 66200 MILES ON IT. WHAT PHONE NUMBER DO YOU HAVE SO I TOO CAN CALL FORD. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SKIPPED MY MODEL YEAR ALSO, BUT COVERS 2015 F450 F550.
This is a recall from ford and I never got a notice! Throwing the P20 BA code. Anyone think they’ll cover it?
I have a 2015 F 450 and mine is throwing the code P204BA. I called my local dealer and was told that my truck isn’t covered because it was built on 12/18/2014, 9 days after the stop date. I will be contacting Ford customer care to see if they will help.
I have a 2013 f350 super duty with 56,000 miles on it 6.7 diesel. And the engine light came on its fault p208 fault reductant heater fault. Is it covered..if not why does it skip to f450 and f550 for 2013 year…would like it explained. It uses the same heater..
same problem and feelings. time to organize
I have my truck into the dealer right now for this problem. I diagnosed the DTC fault and they confirmed. They said not covered by warranty and it would be $1200! I have a 2013 F250 from the Kentucky Plant. Should be covered in my mind.
Wondering if there is a class action lawsuit starting on these faults? I cant get any help from Ford, and am extremely frustrated with the run around…..
THEY SAY THAT AS MORE PROBLEMS ARE REPORTED A RECALL MAY BE ISSUED. MY EXTENDED JUST EXPIRED. TIME TO RALLY THE TROOPS LOL
