SSM 47227 – 2013-2018 Focus/C-MAX/Escape – Key Fob Button Operations And PATS Starting Concerns – Diagnostic Clarifications
For 2013-2018 Focus/C-MAX/Escape vehicles, the key/Fob has 2 separate and unique functions. The buttons on the FOB lock/unlock/panic/trunk, communicate with the body control module via radio waves, requiring a good, properly installed, coin type battery.
For diagnostics with the FOB refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-14.
For starting concerns with the passive anti-theft system (PATS), this function does not require the coin battery, but may require the key to be placed in the backup slot if battery voltage gets low.
Diagnostics for the key not starting the vehicle are located in WSM, Section 419-01B for non-keyless entry and 501-01C for keyless entry.
If both issues occur at the same time, verify keys are correct, and pursue the no start concern first.
