ISSUE:
Some 2017 F-Super Duty pickups equipped with a 34-gallon fuel tank and built on or before 01-Apr-2017 may exhibit a customer concern that the fuel tank is less than advertised capacity. This may be due to a greater total reserve capacity than anticipated once the fuel level gauge and/or distance to empty (DTE) message indicates the fuel tank is empty.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Check the vehicle wheelbase. The 34 gallon fuel tanks are standard on all gasoline pickups with a 142″, 148″, 160″ and 164″ wheelbase and on all diesel pickups with 160″ or 164″ wheelbase. Use the additional information link on the Online Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) report or the window sticker to determine wheelbase. Is the vehicle equipped with the 34-gallon fuel tank?
- Yes – proceed to Step 2.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 413-01 for normal diagnostics.
- Is the vehicle equipped with a gas or diesel engine?
- Was the vehicle built on or before 01-Dec-2016?
- Was the vehicle built on or before 20-Mar-2017?
- Replace the fuel tank. Refer to WSM, Section 310-01.
