Overview:
- When cleaning engine gasket sealing surfaces or cleaning parts from an engine that are to be resealed, do not use surface conditioning discs. These discs can cause damage to the sealing surface or generate debris that will cause damage to the sealing surfaces in cast iron and aluminum engine parts.
- Improper cleaning and surface preparation will not allow the new sealant to adhere to the engine component’s resulting in oil leaks and repeat repairs.
- To properly clean the sealing surface prior to reassembly, use the required Silicone Gasket Remover, part number ZC-30-A
. Allow it to soak in for several minutes to loosen the old RTV sealer/gasket material before using a non-metallic scraper to remove all loose sealer/gasket material.
Surface Preparation for Oil Leaks
- Metal Surface Wipes are now available for engine oil leak reassembly prep.
- Motorcraft Metal Surface Prep Wipes is a pre-saturated disposable wipe to be used as a final step in surface preparation. It creates a conversion coating providing an improved base for RTV sealing. The wipe is a dry-in-place application and does not require rinsing.
- The new Metal Surface Wipes Part number ZC-31-B.
New Surface Prep Procedure:
- Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00. Under General Procedures, locate the RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation Section.
- Special attention should be used at T-Joint locations for cleanliness and silicone application. Follow the appropriate workshop manual section for Silicone sealer application.
