ISSUE:
Some 2016 MKX vehicles equipped with a 3.7L Duratec engine and built on or before 4/21/2016 may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P013C stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be caused by improper sealing of the left side exhaust y-pipe flange due to weld splatter or exhaust pipe intrusion into the flange sealing surface.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Use the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or equivalent scan tool to check for DTCs in the PCM. Is DTC P013C present?
- Yes – proceed to Step 2.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Controls and Emissions Diagnostics (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
- Remove the exhaust y-pipe. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 309-00.
- Inspect the left side exhaust y-pipe flange sealing area that attaches to the left side catalytic converter for signs of weld slag and/or exhaust pipe intrusion into the flange sealing area. Are sign of weld slag and/or exhaust pipe intrusion present in the flange sealing area? (Figures 1-2)

- No – proceed to Step 5.
- Use a flat file or 60 grit sandpaper on an oscillating sander with a flat pad to remove the weld slag and/or exhaust pipe material protruding above the flange sealing surface.
- Removing too much material from the flange sealing surface may cause additional exhaust leaks.
- Check for proper torque of the left side catalyst monitoring sensor (CMS). The CMS should be torqued to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft ).
- Clean the exhaust y-pipe mounting flanges with a clean microfiber cloth and replace the exhaust y-pipe gaskets.
- Reinstall the exhaust y-pipe. Refer to WSM, Section 309-00.
- Clear DTCs from the PCM memory.
