Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor DTCs – 2015 Ford Transit

3.2L DURATORQ-TDCI – MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ILLUMINATED – EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE (EGT) SENSOR RELATED DTCS

ISSUE:

Some 2015 Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.2L Duratorq-TDCi engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with one or more of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory: P0544, P0545, P0546, P06EA, P06EB, P2031, P2032, P2033, P200C, P200E, P2080, P2081, P2084, P2085, P242A, P242B, P242C, P242D and/or P242E.

 

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedures steps to correct the condition.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Using the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or equivalent scan tool, check for any DTCs. Are DTCs P0544, P0545, P0546, P06EA, P06EB, P2031, P2032, P2033, P200C, P200E, P2080, P2084, P2085, P242A, P242B, P242C, P242D and/or P242E present?
   1. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
   2. No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Control / Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnosis.
2. Based on the DTCs identified, replace the corresponding EGT sensor(s) as instructed below.
   1. If DTCs P0544, P0545, P0546, P06EA and/or P2080 are present replace EGT 11 sensor. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-14. (Figure 1A)
   2. If DTCs P06EB, P2031, P2032, P2033, P2084 and/or P2085 are present, replace EGT 12 sensor. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-14. (Figure 1B)
   3. If DTCs P242A, P242B, P242C, P242D and/or P242E are present replace EGT 13 sensor. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-14. (Figure 1C)

3. Is DTC P200C and/or P200E stored in PCM memory with no other EGT sensor DTCs present?
   1. Yes – proceed to Step 4.
   2. No – proceed to Step 5.
4. Use the IDS scan tool or equivalent and refer to the freeze frame data readings to confirm when DTC P200C and/or P200E were set. Replace the corresponding EGT sensor as instructed below.
   1. If EGT 12 sensor temperature is 650 °C (1292 °F) greater than EGT 11 sensor temperature, replace EGT 12 sensor. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-14. (Figure 1B)
   2. If EGT 13 sensor temperature is above 900 °C (1742 °F) replace EGT 13 sensor. Refer to the WSM, Section 303-14. (Figure 1C)
   3. If two or more EGT sensors are reading 900°C (1562 °F) or higher, or if the freeze frame temperature data does not fit the criteria listed above, this article does not apply. Refer to the PC/ED manual for normal diagnosis.
5. Clear all DTCs.
