Summary
Some 2020-2022 Escape/Corsair, 2021-2022 Bronco Sport, 2022 Maverick vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive (4WD) may exhibit a grinding/rubbing noise from floor pan/underbody area. This noise will be most noticeable on tip in acceleration and may be due to a mispositioned fuel tank heat shield. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reposition the fuel tank heat shield.

This article supersedes 19-2377 to update the vehicles and model years affected.
Issue: Some 2020-2022 Escape/Corsair, 2021-2022 Bronco Sport, 2022 Maverick vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive (4WD) may exhibit a grinding/rubbing noise from floor pan/underbody area. This noise will be most noticeable on tip-in acceleration and may be due to a mispositioned fuel tank heat shield. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reposition the fuel tank heat shield.
Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:
- One of the following vehicles:
- 2020-2022 Escape/Corsair
- 2021-2022 Bronco Sport
- 2022 Maverick
- 4WD
- Rubbing/grinding noise, noticeable on tip in acceleration, from the passenger floor pan/under body area
Service Procedure
1. Visually inspect the fuel tank heat shield to see if there are witness marks from where the driveshaft has made contact with the fuel tank heat shield.
2. Are there signs of witness marks from the driveshaft contacting the fuel tank heat shield? (Figure 1)
(1). Yes – proceed to Step 3.
(2). No – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04 for normal diagnostics.

3. Remove the right rear and left front fuel tank heat shield retainer nuts. Refer to WSM, Section 310-01A.
4. Using pliers or equivalent, modify the heat shield attachment star-shaped openings.
(1). Bend the tab closest to the front of the vehicle downward and flatten the tab against the bottom of the heat shield. (Figure 2)
NOTE: Once bent, the tabs should be pointing down and away from the underside of the vehicle. (Figure 2)

5. Loosen the remaining fuel tank heat shield retainer nuts.
6. Reposition the heat shield toward the front of the vehicle. (Figure 3)

7. Secure the heat shield to the fuel tank by tightening the retainer nuts. Refer to WSM, Section 310-01A.
