Summary
Some 2021-2022 F-150 vehicles may exhibit a condition where a front and/or crew cab rear door will not open from the exterior handle when the doors are unlocked or where the exterior handle seems blocked from reaching full travel (full stroke). This may be due to the engagement of the resettable inertia lock feature within the handle reinforcement mechanism. If this is the case, the mechanism can be reset to allow full handle function. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reset the inertia lock.

Issue: Some 2021-2022 F-150 vehicles may exhibit a condition where a front and/or crew cab rear door will not open from the exterior handle when the doors are unlocked or where the exterior handle seems blocked from reaching full travel (full stroke). This may be due to the engagement of the resettable inertia lock feature within the handle reinforcement mechanism. If this is the case, the mechanism can be reset to allow full handle function. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reset the inertia lock.
Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct this condition on vehicles that meet the following criteria:
- 2021-2022 F-150
- Door will not open from the exterior handle
Service Procedure
1. Open the affected door using the inside handle.
2. Remove the exterior handle by removing the exterior front door handle access plug and accessing the release screw on the handle reinforcement.
3. Turn the mechanism release screw counterclockwise 3-4 turns only without pulling on the exterior handle. Do not fully drive the screw as instructed in the handle removal procedure since this disengages the handle from the mechanism while the mechanism bell-crank is not pre-loaded to pre-assembly position. The door lock and/or the bezel plug may also come loose.
4. Turn the mechanism screw clockwise to full torque as instructed in the handle assembly procedure. Verify the following:
(1). Handle functions correctly and the door can be released from outside when unlocked.
(2). Door lock or bezel plug are fully secured to the door.
(3). Handle is fully secured to the door and mechanism.
