Service Procedure

1. Apply masking tape over the A-pillar windshield moulding on the side the noise is coming from. Does the noise go away?

(1). Yes – proceed to Step 2.

(2). No – refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-00 for normal diagnosis.

2. Using the tip of a plastic trim tool, gently try to lift up the outboard edge of the windshield A-pillar moulding. If the moulding is properly secured, the lip will be tightly secured to the A-pillar sheet metal. Continue this inspection from the top of the pillar where the moulding begins to bend toward the roof ditch to the bottom of the pillar. (Figures 1-2)

(1). The very top of the A-pillar moulding where it bends to meet the roof ditch does not contain tape so it will not be secure.

3. For regions of the A-pillar moulding that were found to be loose, lift the moulding and apply a 2 mm (0.079 in) bead of Dow Betaseal™ Express urethane adhesive, SikaTack ASAP+ urethane adhesive or equivalent to the underside of the tape on the moulding. (Figure 3)

(1). This urethane adhesive will stick to the tape but not to the moulding itself.

4. Apply masking tape along the length of the pillar to secure the moulding tightly to the pillar while the adhesive cures.

(1). Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for curing time.

5. Carefully remove the masking tape after the adhesive has fully cured. Removing the tape too quickly may pull the moulding away from the A-pillar.

  1. My 2015 Escape has this problem. It has been making that whistling noise in cross winds on the highway and seems to be getting progressively louder. There is a tsb out for this known problem, yet Ford will not correct it if the vehicle is outside the 3 year/30k warranty period, (mine just ended). It used to be that if there is a tsb out for a problem, the manufacturer would fix the problem whether the warranty was in effect or not. I guess that’s no longer the case. Bad move by Ford!
