REASON FOR PROVIDING EXTENDED COVERAGE

In some of the affected vehicles, an intermittent output shaft speed (OSS) sensor failure may result in an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) and/or wrench light in the instrument cluster with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0720, P0722, P0731 and/or P1500 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM).

SERVICE ACTION

The PCM software update in FSA 16S19 must be completed and closed before proceeding:

DEMONSTRATION / DELIVERY HOLD – Safety Recall 16S19
Certain 2011-2012 Model Year F-150 and 2012 Model Year Expedition, Navigator and Mustang

Powertrain Control Module Reprogramming

If an affected vehicle exhibits an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) and/or wrench light in the instrument cluster with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0720, P0722, P0731 and/or P1500 stored in the PCM, dealers are to replace the molded leadframe.

This service must be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner.

NOTE: If an affected vehicle has other transmission-related concerns and DTCs P0720, P0722, P0731 and/or P1500 are not stored in the PCM, this program does not apply; follow standard workshop manual (WSM) diagnostics.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner Letters were mailed 3rd quarter 2016.  Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that contain one or more of the DTCs listed and/or if the vehicle exhibits an unintended downshift into first gear event, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

  1. My 2015 F150 king Ranch just went down for the same thing. Ford dealer regrettably had to inform me it is not covered under the recall and will cost about $1000 to fix. If this is the same transmission part used in the previous years i feel it should be included in the recall.

  2. I got a 2012 Ford F150 – Same issues as above, most 2012’s are covered mine is slightly over the manufacture date and the lead assembly is NOT covered. However, a software update for a faulty speed sensor is, so they know they have an issue but even after the software update and still issues of downshifting and stuck in gear they will not cover to replace the lead assembly which will take care of faulty sensor. Someone will get hurt bad in an accident!!

  3. my 2011 F150 3.5 L Ecoboost has had the same issue….sporadic downshifting…etc… but like many, mine wasn’t included in the recall as it was not made in the right factory. Go figure. It gets worse..my mechanic now tells me that the problematic speed sensor/lead frame has led to a bad transmission. $7,500 is what it will cost me to fix! How come I had the same exact problem as others but no coverage for trucks not made in the 2 named factories? Not sure where the money will come from to fix it. Step up Ford

  4. My 2013 F150 with 3.5 v.6 and 6 speed auto has done all of the above…. And I had only bought it five days before the speedometer went to zero, wrench light illuminated, air bag light came on, transmission abruptly downshifted from 6th to 1st on freeway at 69 mph, locking tires up and causing a 100+ foot skid on my brand new tires. I was nearly rear-ended by another full size pickup and I was barely able to keep it in my lane before pulling off in a very unsafe spot along the highway. Immediately I cycled engine off and started back up and a motor knock was present. After tow, repair shop says low end motor knock, tearing into to diagnose, must fix motor before transmission can be diagnosed…. Very scary and dangerous transmission issue. My wife and kids will not ride in it until fixed. $22,000 for a pickup we loved and could have cost me my life. Had zero issues with the motor until the transmission downshifted at 69 miles an hour now have a major issue with the motor and the transmission. Great oil pressure ran like a dream I absolutely was in love with this pickup. It’s been in the shop 5 days now with no end in sight. I’ve been reading about all the complaints and issues with the problem I described above but yet the recall only covers 2011 and 2012 F-150s. As a former automobile and heavy equipment mechanic I would bet anything it’s the same exact issue as the recalled pickups so why is mine not included? Ford what are you going to do when someone gets hurt bad?

  5. My truck exhibits the same conditions noted under the recall on a weekly basis. I’ve gotten to where I just shut the truck off and throw it in neutral or what I hope is neutral and cycle the key a couple times while im pulling over. I’ve had the wrench come up and 0720 code. But my truck was built in March of 2011. Ford and everyone I’ve called tells me I’m not covered under the recall. I currently have 125,000 miles roughly. Is there anything I can do other then just pay out of pocket? I know it’s coming when my speedometer goes to zero then the gear indicator goes to first then 3rd then 5th if I’m not quick enough on the key turn.

  6. Did I read it correctly? If there is no MIL code and owner reports no unintended downshifts they do nothing? What is the point of going to the dealer? 2011 5.0L 4×4 xcab xlt w/ only 46k.

  7. I turned my truck in for 2 recall notices the reprogramming and the Leadframe extended coverage. The dealer I took it to said was nothing wrong with the Lead frame, but I’ve been getting the wrench warning light.
My truck is a 2011 F150 and has 153,500 miles on it. Would it still be covered by the recall?

    • It will NOT be covered. I am finding that out the hard way. I never received the recall notice that’s cusses the lead frame to go out due to the dealership sending it to my physical and not my mailing address.
Neither FORD nor the dealer will cover the cost of the repair.

  8. I made and paid for a repair prior to the covered repair replacement of the lead frame. How do I get reimbursed? This was an extremely dangerous condition. I cannot find an email address for Ford anywhere.
