TSB 16-0152 | 6.7L – ILLUMINATED MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) – DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0402 – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 24-OCT-2016 |
Publication Date: November 2, 2016 |
FORD![]() | 2017 F-Super Duty |
ISSUE:
Some 2017 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine built on or before 24-Oct-2016 may exhibit DTC P0402 in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to a mass air flow (MAF) sensor adaption feature which has not yet learned the appropriate values for the vehicle operating condition.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Connect the Ford
Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent scan tool to the data link connector (DLC). Check for DTCs. Is P0402 stored in the PCM without any other DTCs?
- Yes – proceed to Step 2.
- No – this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnostics.
- Did the customer report any drivability symptoms?
- Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to the PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
- No – proceed to Step 3.
- Using the Ford IDS or equivalent scan tool access the PCM datalogger by selecting: Toolbox > Datalogger โ Powertrain โ Engine and read parameter identification (PID) MAFLRN_AIDLE. Is PID MAFLRN_AIDLE value greater than or equal to 0.04?
- Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to the PC/ED manual for normal diagnostics.
- No – proceed to Step 4.
- Access and record current programmable parameters. Using the IDS scan tool, access the programmable parameters and record the values for:
- Axle ratio
- Tire size
- Speed control
- Engine shutdown system
- Vehicle speed limit
- Diesel particulate filter (DPF) manual regeneration
- Snowplow package
- Update the as built data in the PCM. Make sure you are connected to the internet when programming as built data to obtain the latest configuration.
- Make sure to select configuration data when prompted.
- Access programmable parameters. Compare values recorded from Step 4. If any of the designated programmable parameters have reset to a different value then what was recorded, use the IDS to restore the previous values.
- Clear all DTCs from the PCM.

Service Information & Reprogramming
Software necessary to program electronic modules to the latest calibration level, perform module initialization (PATS), and set Programmable Parameters on Ford, Lincoln
and Mercury
vehicles.
Ford Module Programming (FMP) is a software application that allows subscribers to program electronic modules on Ford, Lincoln
and Mercury
vehicles. It can be used for:
- Reprogramming emission-related (OBDII) modules on some vehicles manufactured in 1995 and all vehicles manufactured from 1996 to the present
- Reprogramming or reconfiguring non-emission-related modules on many vehicles (UBP and MS-CAN not supported)
In addition, module initialization (PATS) functions such as Keycode Erase/Reprogram and PCM Parameter Reset can be done using this application.
J2534 Device
using Ford Module Programming (FMP) can Reprogram and Configure most Modules.
