SSM 46257 – 2017 F-Super Duty – With Factory Trailer Brake Controller (TBC) – Trailer Charging System Operation – Service Tip

All 2017 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a factory trailer brake controller (TBC) utilize a trailer module (TRM) which initiates the trailer charging system.

For trailer charging to operate, the TRM must detect a trailer is connected and a brake pedal input before charging will be present at the trailer connector.

Adding the trailer battery charge relay and fuse into the battery junction box are not required to operate trailer charging with a TRM.

If testing of the trailer charging system is required without a trailer, refer to the updated diagnostics and system operation found in the online Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 417-01 Exterior Lighting.

  1. This whole system is not one “Fords Better Ideas” that for sure…..I have had it back to the Dealership 4 times now and they tell me the same thing.
Ford Dealer gives me this paper from the Factory known as a SSM45507….2017 F350 SUPER DUTY….Instrument Cluster Information Screen Defaults to Trailer town ser up Every key cycle with no Trailer attached. Of course you need to be a Ford Engineer to understand what they are telling you. 3 1/2 hrs. later. I’m still confussed and Ford won’t do anything about it. NOT ONE OF FORDS BETTER IDEA!
2nd. SSM 46257 BULITEN WITH FACTORY BRAKE CONTROLLER (TBC) WHATEVER THE HELL THAT IS. Factory Charging system operation.

  2. So there is no way to use the 5th wheel connector in the bed of my new truck to charge the batteries of my slide in camper unless I also connect a tailer with electric breaks? This seams short sighted and disappointing that I will need to wire yet another connector in the bed of my truck after it already has the trailer package and 5th wheel package from the factory.

  3. The downside of the TRM configuration is that if disconnection is sensed it switches OFF the TBC. Damned scary when you do have a trailer on and suddenly you are left with only the tow vehicle brakes to pull you up.
