Brake Hose Corrosion May Cause Brake Fluid Leak

A brake fluid leak can reduce brake effectiveness, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford F-650 and F-750 trucks. The brake circuit hose assemblies located between the master cylinder and the hydraulic control unit, may have been manufactured without anti-corrosion plating on the coupling fittings, or “ferrules,” of the hoses. This can lead to premature corrosion, and result in a brake fluid leak.

Remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake hose assemblies, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin July 9, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 18S19.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Dated June 12, 2018

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Vehicle Model Year Assembly Plant Build Dates
F-650 / F-750 2018 Ohio January 26, 2018 through March 13, 2018

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

The affected vehicles may contain flexible brake line assemblies, located between the master cylinder and the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), that do not have the specified anti-corrosion plating on the metal ferrules.  A lack of anti-corrosion plating can lead to premature corrosion of the brake line ferrules.  This can subsequently result in brake fluid leakage, and reduced brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.

SERVICE ACTION

Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to replace both flexible brake line assemblies on suspect vehicles.  This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.

OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of July 09, 2018.  Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee.  Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle.  Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

* * * CAMPAÑA DE SEGURIDAD IMPORTANTE * * *
