Inflator Component may Detach During Deployment

If the component detaches during deployment, it may enter the passenger compartment and be a projectile within the vehicle cabin, increasing the risk of injury.

 

Summary

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 Ford Escape vehicles. The side curtain air bags on these vehicles have a component that may detach during deployment of the inflatable curtain air bag.

 

Remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver and passenger side curtain air bags, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 17S44.

Approximately 1,000 VINs were added to this safety recall on February 7, 2018.

 

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

In some of the affected vehicles, the top hat diffuser on the side curtain airbag inflator may detach from the inflator during deployment. A detached top hat diffuser may cause the side curtain airbag to tear and not fully inflate.  There is also potential for the diffuser to become a projectile in the passenger compartment.  A top hat diffuser that detaches during airbag deployment may increase the risk of injury in a crash.

 

SERVICE ACTION

Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to replace the affected side curtain airbag.  This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.

 

New! OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE

Owner letters for the original population were mailed the week of January 29, 2018.  Owner letters for the additional vehicles are expected to be mailed the week of February 12, 2018.  Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee.  Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle.  Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

FSA VIN LISTS ACTIVATION

FSA VIN Lists will be available through https://web.fsavinlists.dealerconnection.com on December 19, 2017.  Owner names and addresses will be available by February 16, 2018.

NOTE:  Your FSA VIN Lists may contain owner names and addresses obtained from motor vehicle registration records.  The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than in connection with this recall is a violation of law in several states, provinces, and countries.  Accordingly, you must limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

 

SOLD VEHICLES

  • Owners of affected vehicles will be directed to dealers for repairs.
  • Immediately contact any of your affected customers whose vehicles are not on your VIN list but are identified in OASIS. Give the customer a copy of the Owner Notification Letter (when available) and schedule a service date.
  • Correct other affected vehicles identified in OASIS which are brought to your dealership.
  • Dealers are to prioritize repairs of customer vehicles over repairs of new and used vehicle inventory.

 

STOCK VEHICLES

  • Correct all affected units in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.

 

DEALER-OPERATED RENTAL VEHICLES

The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act law effective June 2016 prohibits a rental company from selling, renting or leasing vehicles subject to a safety or compliance recall.  Please consult your legal counsel for legal advice.

 

TITLE BRANDED / SALVAGED VEHICLES

Affected title branded and salvaged vehicles are eligible for this recall.

 

New! ADDITIONAL REPAIR (LABOR TIME AND/OR PARTS)

Additional repairs identified as necessary to complete the FSA should be managed as follows:

  • For related damage and access time requirements, refer to the Warranty and Policy Manual – Section 6 – Ford/Lincoln Program Policies – Field Service Actions (FSA) – Related Damage.
  • For vehicles within new vehicle bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage, no SSSC approval is required for these vehicles:
    • Ford vehicles – 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • For vehicles outside new vehicle bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage, submit an Approval Request to the SSSC Web Contact Site prior to completing the repair.

A detached top hat diffuser may cause the side curtain airbag to tear and not fully inflate. There is also potential for the diffuser to become a projectile in the passenger compartment. A top hat diffuser that detaches during airbag deployment may increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Before demonstrating or delivering any new in-stock vehicles involved in this recall, dealers are to replace the affected side curtain airbag. This service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner.

Ford Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in your vehicle, with the VIN shown above.

What is the issue? On your vehicle, one or both of the side curtain airbag inflators have a diffuser that may detach during airbag deployment.
What is the risk? If an inflator diffuser detaches during airbag deployment it may create a tear that could cause the side curtain airbag to not fully inflate. There is also potential for the diffuser to become a projectile in the passenger compartment.  An inflator diffuser that detaches during airbag deployment may increase the risk of injury in a crash.
What will Ford and your dealer do? Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to replace the affected side curtain airbags free of charge (parts and labor).
How long will it take? The time needed for this repair is less than one half day.  However, due to service scheduling requirements, your dealer may need your vehicle for a longer period of time.
What should you do? Please call your dealer without delay and request a service date for Recall 17S44. Provide the dealer with your VIN, which is printed near your name at the beginning of this letter.

Ford Motor Company wants you to have this safety recall completed on your vehicle.  The vehicle owner is responsible for making arrangements to have the work completed.

¿Qué riesgo existe? Si un difusor de un inflador se desprende durante el despliegue de una bolsa de aire, se podría crear una rasgadura, con lo cual la bolsa de aire lateral tipo cortina podría no inflarse por completo. También existe la posibilidad de que el difusor se transforme en un proyectil dentro el compartimiento de pasajeros.  Un difusor de un inflador que se desprende durante el despliegue de la bolsa de aire podría aumentar el riesgo de sufrir una lesión en un choque.
¿Qué medidas adoptarán Ford y su distribuidor? Ford Motor Company ha autorizado a su distribuidor a reemplazar las bolsas de aire laterales tipo cortina afectadas, sin costo alguno (piezas y mano de obra).
¿Cuánto tiempo tomará? El tiempo necesario para reparar será menos de medio día.  Sin embargo, debido a los requisitos de planificación de servicio, es posible que su distribuidor tarde un poco más.
